jjbeauty - I really like Kat Von D's foundation. It offers full coverage w/o that thick, cakey look and settles into a nice, soft finish.

BTW: how did you get that font on here? Love it!

jjbeauty - welcome to the board!

At 65, I've had oily skin since I was a teenager. For me, wearing a primer under my makeup keeps the greasies away and I can go a whole day without blotting or applying powder. I tried a few primers, but the one I've stayed with for years is Mally's primer in the tube. It doesn't matter what foundation I put on over it, I do not get oily for 6-8 hours.

Liquid foundations, even water-based, make my skin more oily than compact foundation. After lots of trial and error, the Cover Girl AquaSmooth compact foundation gives the best buildable coverage, plus prevents oiliness.

Good luck!

Mineral foundations tend to work better for oily skin than cream or liquid foundations. Although, there are some liquids specifically made for oily skin which you could try. (Neutrogena comes to mind right off the top of my head.) Acne-prone skin is more difficult to deal with; I've had both for 40 years. I find the mineral 'powders' work best for me, and those with minimal ingredients even better. Bare Minerals original and philosophy have those right here on the Q. Bare Minerals covers imperfections better and I personally find philosophy to be a little more drying (although that might be better for your case). The nice thing about buying here is that you can try them out and if they don't work for any reason, you can return.

Not to mention that you can get loads of advice about them right here on the forums! Good luck, jjbeauty123, and welcome!

My favorite foundations for oily skin are Revlon ColorStay Whipped, Tarte Amazonian Clay and Lancome Teint Idole Ultra 24H. I've also heard really good things about Estee Lauder Double Wear for oily skin.

If shine is your main issue, you might also want to look into a good mattifying primer and finishing powder. (Milk of Magnesia makes a good mattifying primer. Read more about it here.)

I know you said that you "don't have time to go out to the shops either so would rather buy online", but honestly, I feel like that's the opposite of what you should do when buying foundation. If you buy online and don't find a good match, you'll spend twice a much time dealing with returning it and looking for colors that do match. I think that for foundations, it's worth the time to get color matched and pick up samples where you can.

Welcome, JJBeauty!

I also have oily skin, and in my 40's it is getting harder to find just the right products.

What I have landed on right now that works is either Bare Minerals Original (used with my Laura Mercier Primer), Covergirl 3 in 1 Outlast (really good for full coverage, doesn't settle in fine lines and lasts all day long), and I even really like Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer (when I use this it just looks sooo nice on the skin -lighter coverage-and seems to actually balance my oily skin for the day).

Good luck!

Janie

Estee Lauder Double Wear

Lancôme 24 Hr. Teint Idole

MakeUpForever Mat Velvet Plus

Revlon Colorstay (for oily skin, very similar to EL DW, and much cheaper)

All of these are VERY MATTE!! High coverage, and for oily skin.

All of the above are LIQUIDS, which can be bad news for acne-prone skin

Bare Minerals mineral foundations (original and matte) are great and never break me out. They are buildable coverage too. The original can be itchy because it has bismuth in it. The matte one does not.

I would check out a good primer too, and/or a good setting spray for oily skin. Hourglass has a mineral primer that may work. I would look for one that is silicone free for your acne-prone skin.

Best of luck!!

Rimmel Stay Matte Primer is new to the market and excellent. Boots makes a mattifying primer, too but it takes a bit of a learning curve. Urban Decay and Skindinavia have setting sprays for oily skin. Rimmel Stay Matte powder is excellent for holding oil or taking shine away mid day.

I have to say that most of the suggestions here have not worked for me. I have combo/oily skin that breaks out from so many things that I try. That may not be your issue, so some of this may work better for you.

Skin care makes a huge difference with my foundation, but I have never found a primer that does anything for my oily skin, or it breaks me out.

Mineral/powder foundations don't control my oil, at all, even if I have my skin care correct. And, they disappear from my skin in a couple of hours.

I do have to use liquid foundation, but so many break me out. what works for me is-Mac Studio Sculpt or Pro Longwear, tarte bb tinted treatment, Naploean Perdis China Doll or Revlon Colorstay Whipped (but the colors are odd).

I used Mac Careblend Powder over any foundation.

Another thing to be careful about is when you are using full coverage, long wearing foundations it to make sure that the cleanser that you are using is really breaking that down & cleaning it off of your skin.

Good luck. I hope you find what works for you.

I've had the best luck with three products:

Covergirl Outlast Stay Fabulous 3-in-1 liquid foundation, but I had to purchase two colors to mix for my exact skin tone.

Maybelline Dream Matte Powder

Ultra Matte by FACE atelier setting spray

I disagree about using a primer, it's just another layer oily skin doesn't need and all the ones I tried didn't do a thing for me. Plus the Covergirl Outlast foundation has a built-in primer in it.

I've used Revlon Colorstay and Estee Lauder Double Wear and they are fine if you can find a color to match your skin tone. However, both of these foundations have a more plastic finish (they can look a little fake) than the Covergirl Outlast does.

JJ, I also have oily skin but not acne. However, I'm here to totally agree with the importance of using a good mattifying primer and hi-def finishing powder (with a kabuki brush you get an air-brushed look) and a setting spray meant for oily complexions.

Laura Geller sells Set 'n Stay Setting Spray here on the Q and on Ulta.

Urban Decay has a good one also: Deslick Makeup Setting Spray. Available on Sephora.

Go to Sephora and search mattifying . I've been using a sample of Murad. I did find this: COVER FX
Mattifying Primer With Anti-Acne Treatment COVER FX for $38.

A little tends to go a long way.

I swear by MAKE UP FOREVER - their high-def finishing pwder. Also a little goes a long way.

Putting together the right skin care system for acne is also important. PaulasChoice dot com might help by explaining what products will keep your complexion soothed and calm vs. inflamed. The site is highly credible.

Good luck!

On 3/3/2014 Sweet Susie said:

I think I need to clarify my use of the word "primer". I used it to mean a product applied before MU. What I meant specifically is the use of a product that blots oil.

During the day you can use a compact like this one:

Urban Decay
De-Slick Mattifying Powder

This shine-stopping pressed powder blots oil and keeps shine at bay. The lavender shade applies invisibly and works on every skintone. Try it on naked skin (if you run into the hot guy at the gym), or over foundation (for touch ups on the dance floor without destroying your makeup). Because the formula contains super lightweight, oil-absorbing rice powder, you won't feel the powder, but you'll see the shine-free results.

Laura Geller has a similar product. I recommend both.

I have extremely oily skin and I use Estée Lauder Double Wear. It is the best foundation EVER! It is more expensive than the drug store brands but very worth it.

Looks flawless for hours and only need to blot once during the day.

Awesome tips here ladies - I'll be trying some of these other tips to see if I can get longer wear out of my own makeup!!

On 3/3/2014 Dusty1 said:

Dusty, you didn't mention what your skin care routine includes. Because of my own oily skin and large pores, plus a tendency to get red cheeks...............maybe we might have certain issues in common. I've started with a regimen of cleanse-tone-exfoliate-moisturize with sunscreen every day plus add treatments: Vitamin C, 2% BHA gel, an antioxidant serum at night. I plan to add a copper peptide and retinol.

I've read that AHAs are good for acne/breakouts and BHAs have been cleaning out my pores and shrinking them. I have Perricone's Pore Treatment which has also helped immensely.

My routine has not been aimed at reducing wrinkles because I don't have many yet. I wanted to tone & brighten and even out my skin texture. Also, using my Clarisonic helps, altho I don't do it everynight.

Good luck!
