I'm helping my brother move and in one of the bathrooms the floor tile and grout are stained with blue dye around the base of the toilet. I'm assuming this is from the blue toilet bowl cleaner. I think he used one of the disposable toilet brush gadgets (fresh brush). The top of these brushes have blue dye on them. I guess some of the dye ran down the toilet onto the floor. I've done a few searches and I've read suggestions like barkeepers friend, soft scrub w/ bleach, peroxide, magic eraser. Has anyone had this problem and found a remedy? Thanks.

Well to start, I would try something abrasive like the softscrub with bleach and a good firm scrub brush. Keep a damp cloth nearby to keep the blue dye from going further out on the tile and grout.

Hopefully that will work. If not, I would spray some Tilex (which seems to bleach out mold, but not remove it). You have to wait till it dries and usually staining is bleached away once completely dry.

Both of these things are super toxic, especially the Tilex. Open window and run bathroom fan. Don't breathe it in.

I wouldn't touch this job with a ten foot pole, I would make your brother do it. I'm too phobic around toilys as it is!

Try "ZEP" grout cleaner, you can get it at Lowes. It's the best grout cleaning product EVER!

Good luck!

Thanks everyone for your suggestions. We've got everything except the grout cleaner and he has a Lowe's near him. At least he's got until the end of the month. After seeing the guy on QVC demonstrate those magic erasers removing paint from tile, I wonder if that might work too? It's worth a try.

I suggest pouring a little bleach on the tile/grout and using a toothbrush to remove. Softscrub with bleach is also amazing.

It's worth a try.

I would try a magic eraser if you have one, but don't buy them just for this project, as I doubt it would work well on the grout. Those don't seem to work as well as demonstrated. The blue stain is probably soaked into the grout, so you need a grout cleaner that will lift out the stain. I bought some stuff at a flea market that works really well. But I am sure you can find grout cleaning products at Lowe's that work well too. Good luck.

White vinegar. Use it straight from the bottle - don't dilute it. This cleaned our grout beautifully then we sealed the grout. HTH!

Instead of trying to fix the color, how about those grout paints. Just roll on white, or whatever color you need. I think they sell various shades.
