I first noticed my naturally wavy/curly hair getting straighter close to a year ago. It has continued to get straighter since.

Has anyone else had this happen? I've heard hormonal changes can cause it.

Hi Sue! This happened to me when I went through menopause at 50. My very curly hair is now slightly wavy. Not straight enough to just air dry but I wear it in a bob which I blow dry using a large round brush. I never thought I would be able to wear my hair this way. My sister who is two years younger still has the curl. In my case I do think it was hormonal.

For what it's worth, the opposite happened to me. I had stick straight hair as a child and then around 12 or 13 I had a perm that lasted for a year... then 2 years. It wasn't until I made a comment about it to my high school biology teacher that she suggested my hormone changes as a teenager had given me naturally curly hair! I thought it was just a great perm haha! I still have very curly hair. I'm guessing you aren't a teenager (well maybe at heart lol) but yes, hormones can definitely create changes in your hair follicles.

Your hormones are the culprit. Have you had a baby or are you in menopause? You could be having one or the other.

This happened to me when I had my kids. My hair almost looked like I had a spiral perm pre-kids, then after my first son was born it went straight. And during the process it looked like I had a perm growing out. After my second son it got back its wave. I have heard it is from the hormones. Oddly - first kid has straight hair and the second kid has curls!

Wow, so interesting! I have heard of hair turning curly or wavy before, in fact, I think that is fairly common. I love my curly hair and hope not to experience this! Many people would probably be happy though, cuz they say most people want what they don't have! How do you feel about this OP?

I am 35 and have noticed over time that my curly hair is less curly than it used to be. No one would notice this change, but I do. If I look at pictures of myself in my 20s, I can see an obvious difference in the curl pattern. My curls are much looser now.

I was one of those children that had wavy (almost straight) hair as a child. When I became a teen, my hair turned curly and has remained that way ever since.

Not related to menopause, but my mom had hyperthyroid concurrently with myelodysplasia which apparently made it less obvious to her drs. Her hair went almost totally white at one point, but when they corrected the thyroid, it went darker gray within months. It was very weird.

Mine went from straight to wavy. After each of my 2 pregnancies it got wavier. I guess it was hormonal.

Hopefully you are enjoying what it is doing, and it isn't creating more work for you.

On 2/17/2014 Charm said:
My hair is just the opposite. Mine is getting curlier as I grow older, and it's driving me nuts. The frizz is impossible to control!

My hair used to be a frizzy mess. I would blow it dry, but by afternoon the volume would grow and it was just a struggle to control the fizz. About a year ago, I just decided to let my hair dry by itself. Within 4 hours, much to my surprise, I had curls - lots of curls. I have decided to embrace the curl and now at 69 wear my hair natural. I have done lots of research about "curly girls" hair cutting and hair products to encourage the curl. I also just had my DNA done and, sure enough, I have the genes for curly hair and found out I am 61% Irish, instead of the heinz 57 I thought I was. It is so funny because all of my friends and family think I've had a perm. BTW, I do complete replacement, bioidentical hormone therapy. I have always had lots of thick hair. The texture has changed over time to thinner and finer hair.

My stick straight hair has become slightly wavy and not as baby fine after menopause. One of my sons had stick straight baby fine hair as a child and it became coarse and curly in his teens. Hormones can do such strange things to our hair!

Wish I had my curls still! Mine was 'Roseanne Rosanadana' (showing my age!) when I was younger, with each kid it got less curly. But I loved the more manageable curls!! Now with menopause it's slightly wavy- I can get the curls going if I fuss but I had so many years of mother nature doing her thing I don't want to start with that stuff every day! Right now my hair is chin length, not layered- and I try for a beachy curl look with a little product each day.

My hair was stick straight as a child too. It is getting more and more curly as I grow older.

I read somewhere that the straightness or curliness of your hair is determined by the shape of your hair follicles...and that changes about every 5 years and is also affected by hormones, etc.

My sister used to have very curly hair. After each of her four pregnancies, her hair became less curly. Now, it is nearly straight.
