A month ago my scalp started to flake above my forehead hairline and some on top. I'm talking flaking not powder size dandruff. I switched shampoos, tried WEN tea tree, tried head and shoulders. Nothing worked. I went to the drugstore and started reading the bottles of different types of dry scalp, itching, dandruff shampoos. One particular active ingredient caught my eye, salicylic acid. I thought, hey I bet I have some type of face cleanser at home that has salicylic acid just sitting in a cabinet. Sure enough I found one. I used it to wash my scalp making sure I really rubbed my scalp and let it sit while I continued my shower. At the end I rinsed and used my normal conditioner. I usually wash my hair every other day. I used this method for 1 week and no more flaking. Just for insurance I used this method every other wash the next week. So far so good. I hope you find something that works for you.

I had the same problem last year. I was using a sulfate-free shampoo that, obviously, didn't work for me. So, I switched to Head nd Shoulders that has some almond oil in it. No problems or itchy scalp since. And, it doesn't strip my hair of its color.

Tea Tree Oil, but not straight, it needs help from a carrier oil, like jojoba. Otherwise, buy some WEN Tea Tree Oil that's already in a blend for you. You can find it here on QVC, chazdeanstudio dot com, or carefully select on eBay. Apply the oil to your scalp at night, massage it in, and cleanse your hair in the morning. Continue this as often as you cleanse, applying the oil the night before.

Carols Daughter on the other shopping site makes an oil specifically for dry, itchy scalps. I haven't read the reviews, but it sounded good to me. I suffer 24/7 with scalp itchiness. No flaking or issues. Had 2 scalp biopsies because it's been soooo long. Dr. said scalp looks very healthy, but I'm showing some inflamation...could be a reaction to something I took. So...I have tried everything for relief, and then some!! As for you, if it's not a health issue, maybe some Apple cidar vinegar rinse, or lavender oil. I sometimes apply a liitle vit. E oil, or Palmers cocoa oil at bedtime. Go to a beauty supply, and ask for a good deep hydrating conditioner, as well as a daily one with shampoo. Load up on water, and keep your bedroom humidified. I live in Florida, so humidity is plentiful. Sally's also sells a special line for scalp itchiness. I could go on and on, and...But I know you'll find something thats works for you!!

Oh...I found that Aveeno Nourish shampoo and conditioner is pretty darn good!! Let me know how you do.

Thank you again!!!

My Sephora carries some Wen, and it also has Carol's Daughter so that should be easy to check out, and I have a Target run to do tomorrow, so will look at the Head & Shoulders.

I have tried everything even prescription shampoos which only made it worse. I can't wear anything dark. It absolutely drives me freaking nuts. I never had this until I hit menopause. I have had moderate success with Tea Tree (WEN) and while it helps it doesn't make it go away.

I was staying hydrated, washing my hair with the "blue" shampoo etc. I tried a lot of different things. I had seen many Wen presentations but never really thought that it would be an answer to my scalp issue. I just thought it was for pretty hair. Then right after Christmas I was looking into more solutions and Wen Tea Tree cleansing conditioner kept coming up. So I decided I'd at least try it. So happy I did. It's been around 5 weeks of using it and my scalp is like new. No more itchy scalp, no more bumps, no more flakes! The bonus is my hair looks great too! I read a lot about it before using. And I know not everyone has had a positive result with Wen, but from what I've looked at, most people do. If you can, at least try it for a while. Most places you can get it offer a 30 day return policy. If your not sure about how to use it or anything, the people here and on the wen forums are so great and helpful. I hope you find the solution that works for you. This was my story. Hope it helps.

When I had this, I started using WEN Tea Tree---NOT my favorite among them, but very effective for a flaking scalp. After a week or two, the flaking went away and never came back, even after I stopped using the Tea Tree. I am sure other products with tea tree oil will work too.

The cleansers I use now are WEN seasonals and Suave Natural Infusions or Nexus Split End Therapy.

It is the perfect remedy for those suffering from an unbalanced scalp, whether it is dry, oily, itchy, sensitive, or prone to dandruff. A fortifying boost for hair, it prepares the scalp and boosts the action of thinning hair treatments.

In regard to Phytopolleine, you use it 1-2 times a week, applying it to your scalp and massaging it in in a circular pattern, about 30 mins or so before I wash my hair. I love this product so much I'm giving a couple of their other products a try.

I've had bouts of oily flakes mostly on the top of my head for decades.....spreads to the sides of my nose and my eyebrows as well........it comes and goes as it pleases. I used to use Head and Shoulders on all of these areas (keep away from eyes of course) and it helped a lot. The last few years it has gotten a lot worse. I use Nizoral Shampoo now (over the counter, but there is a prescription strength shampoo and cream as well) and it works for ME, and that's the key word.....ME. You may have to experiment with or rotate the over the counter dandruff shampoos to find out which one works best for you or if you need to continue rotating. This is what I've read here and there over the past few years so I can't say any or all of it's true:

1--It comes and goes at will.........no rhyme or reason.....seems to appear with change of season.

2--There are five active ingredients that can be used in over the counter dandruff shampoos; salicylic acid, coal tar (Neutrogena ?), ketoconazole (Nizoral), pyrithione zinc (Head and Shoulders) and I can't recall the 5th..sorry.

3--the poster who mentioned getting relief from salicylic acid was probably right on the mark......I think salicylic acid is a Beta Hydroxy Acid and can be applied to the scalp to relieve some of the red spots and other symptoms..

4--there are steroid and other prescription shampoos that can be used. I went to the derm a few years ago, he diagnosed the sebhorrheic dermatitis, and he gave me a prescription for a steroid shampoo. If I hadn't had insurance to cover the cost of this shampoo, it costs approximately $200.00!!! I bought it but never used it since it said in the instructuions not to get in eyes (of course) or the skin on the neck or back, etc.! How the heck can you wash your hair and not do that?? Plus I've been told that if steroids are used on the skin (including scalp) for more than 2 weeks, it can thin the skin!

5--There are 2 websites I suggest you go to for excellent info: Paula's Choice....there's a section on skin problems..........eczema, psoriasis, etc. and healthtap.com

6--Please don't do what I did wasting all those years and money trying to fix it myself! I think that after all the products I bought over the years, that sum probably would have paid for a visit to the derm with or without insurance and I would have had a diagnosis, treatment and peace of mind much sooner!

HTH!!

item

I had this problem years ago and the Dr told me to use "Sea Breeze" on my scalp. After you shampoo and condition, rub some "Sea Breeze" where you are having the problem. Do not rinse.

It was a cheap and easy fix for me.

Dry weather does that. The cold really wrecks havoc on the skin and scalp. Do you have dry hands and legs? Scalp could be dry too. Try oiling the scalp before a shampoo. Use a mild shampoo. Tea Tree oil is good. Put some on a q tip and rub it in , scalp only. a few hours before you shampoo, or let it sit over night if you shampoo in morning. Dry scalp causes itching, itching causes more itching and the skin flakes off. Also, have you had and tints or new hair products that could have burned the scalp a bit? One tiime, I must have been extra sensitive, but my scalp peeled and itched about a week after tinting, And I have tinted for years. Sometime when we use face washes and face creams they can bleed into the scalp when we wash. It lays on the scalp and peels the skin.HTH

I also take a q tip and rub a bit of SCalpacin on my scalp. Cures it one day! Has a little cortisone in it
