I agree with a vinegar rinse, but not sure that it won't strip out some color. My parents had a salon on the Gold Coast of Chicago for years and this was always one of their tips. Perhaps if you are concerned about your new hair color, you might wait until you are closer to your retouch.

I use gel and mousse on my hair. I know I have a ton of buildup on my hair, and I really want to get rid of the buildup, but I don't want to strip or fade my newly colored hair.

I know there are clarifying shampoos out there, but I don't dare use them. I've also heard of using baking soda to remove buildup, but I am also nervous about using that, too.

Any suggestions? Thanks!

On 2/14/2014 mcall1020 said:
try wen, i think the baking soda is very harsh. or maybe try any conditioner you have and rinse really well.

I rarely use shampoo any more, and when I do I use a low sulfate shampoo. I almost always use the CO method to wash my hair. I just don't think that is enough to remove all the buildup. I was hoping there was something else I could do.

Use a shampoo for color treated hair. How much build-up can there be?

Baking soda really gets your scalp clean, clean but strips color out. I use it at before coloring.

I would try vinegar rinse.

Or cut down on the amount of styling products

It sounds like you may have just had your hair colored and may be waiting that 36hr period before you shampoo again. If not, I still say the same thing - WEN.

I use hair spray when I style my hair, there's build-up with most of our products. I've been using WEN for the last few years and find it really cleans my scalp & hair.

Your shampoo should work just fine. If you get those products on your hands, it washes off, right? So as long as you are working the shampoo around to break down the products it should be washing off with each shampoo.

Using a clarifying shampoo once in a while to get rid of the product buildup will not alter your colored hair all that much. In fact your hair will look better because the product buildup is rather dulling to the hair shaft. I always know when I need to use it as my hair looks dull. Don't be afraid of it, using it once a week or even once every two weeks is not a problem.

Kerastase is expensive but the product is fantastic. I have grey hair, oops...I mean brunette. I color and use Kerastase shampoo for color-treated hair, I also use the conditioning treatment in the line as well. Fantastic shine, does not strip color and keeps off any buildup of products.

I saw a tip from one of the YouTube gurus about this. She said to use your normal shampoo, but to leave it on a few extra minutes before rinsing and using conditioner, and doing that will clarify your hair. I haven't tried it yet, but it makes sense.

Apple Cider Vinegar is supposed to have the same Ph as your hair. I have tried it with Braggs Apple Cider. I don't remember how much vinegar to water ratio, but you could probably google it, that's what I did. I don't have buildup because I wash my hair frequently and it's color treated. Don't be afraid to wash your hair, you do need to get rid of debris and dead skin cells, if your scalp isn't healthy your hair won't be either.
