On 2/12/2014 cassiem said:
That's a good idea, Magemay. I love when companies put a production date on the product or packaging, so at least I know when it was bottled. But even that doesn't guarantee that it was stored properly after the manufacturing/bottling process. After a terrible experience with a skin infection on my face, I tend to err on the side of caution when it comes to skin care. If anything looks or smells the slightest bit off or I have any question/doubts about it, into the trash it goes.

I agree cassiem, and do the same thing. I just posted an experience on another thread about spraying products on our faces. DID that and even with eyes closed tightly some still made it's way in and caused a real mess. Needless to say, I won't be spraying anything even remotely near my face again.

Most often we learn some of the greatest lessons the hard way, but if something was learned, then something good came out of it!

If I order oils for instance,, I'll order them in the cooler months (fall and winter) so that they aren't making such a long trip in a hot truck. Often times they have a long way to travel here to the northeast.

I moved last year and a lot of things got mis-categorized. I was in storage this weekend and found a lost bottle of JM Argan oil ...... when I got it home and smelled it, it was pretty disgusting! ........... The bottle contains 100% argan oil ..... no preservatives ...... so I guess it has a shelf life. ..... Anyone else have this problem? .... The only solution is to use it up .... don't let it sit around.

Last year I bought the small bottle from STO, used it a few times and the lest it sit. I didn't start using it again until a few months ago. It was fine and actually very pleasant smelling. Then I ordered a big one from STO. I can't say it stinks or is even questionable, but it certainly doesn't smell like the first bottle I bought.

The timing of this post is perfect. I found a jar of Signature Club A argan oil pads last night and they smelled rancid. I had used about half the pads about two years ago. No way would I put it on my face now. I hated to just toss it out, so I used a few pads to clean some furniture. It took off the dust and left the finish glowing. I won't buy this again.

After reading a piece on preservatives in cosmetics, I'm thinking that I may not want something that has been sitting in my drawer for a year. It likened it to fresh food going bad without refrigeration. I'm not sure I want something that has so many chemical preservatives it lasts way beyond its "natural" life.

I see Vitamin E used frequently as a preservative, and there are probably more non-chemical ones, as well.

I wish I could remember where I read it, but I don't. :-(

I think you were wise to rely on the Smell Test. :-)

I had a bottle from a kit that went rancid in less than 6 months. It was sitting on my vanity, sealed, not exposed to heat. It was pricey enough that I just could not through it out, so I mixed it with my foot cream until it was gone. I read another post recently where someone had one of the color sticks go rancid. Now I keep my oil and oil cleanser in the fridge and refill my travel bottles from there. I don't want to take any chances - it's too expensive to be throwing it away.

I have the infinity cream, and I've had it separate, but still smells fine. Also the balm seems to be fine.

If it smells bad, I wouldn't use it, well, maybe as furniture polish. I always get 1 oz. size oils, unless it's one that I use more. Coconut seems to hold out pretty well.

I've had a bottle for a few years, that I've finally almost finished, and it doesn't smell like anything. In fact if I use my Maricuja Oil, that one smells like oil, but JM Argan Oil doesn't. Maybe since yours was in storage, did it get really hot or anything? That could change it and make it go bad quicker.

Oil stability can be effected by a number of different things such as light, temperature, air and moisture exposures and because they are fats, they do have shelf lives that will vary depending on each oil and type of oil.

For optimum safe keeping, they should be stored in a dark pump style container (I prefer glass) that has a cap and in a cool dark place. Some refrigerate well and those that don't need to be stored away from exposures.

Unfortunately, even unopened oils can go bad if they are exposed to heat or light. Most unopened oils have a two to three year shelf life, but again, it depends on the container and how they have been stored. The hard part is that even if YOU store it in a dark, cool place, you have no idea of the conditions during shipping or how long it sat on a shelf in a store/warehouse before you purchase.

The same can be said for other skincare as well, especially for those that are mass produced.

When I order oils (from the bulk/raw ingredient co.'s) I inquire first to ask about the labeled date on the orig. container because those oil are stored in bulk then transferred into smaller containers upon order.

I have a huge problem with BE's Primer. I started buying the little bottles again, but I think I need to shake them every time I use them.
