Within the ROKU "store" there are all kinds of channels to choose from, from all kinds of interest categories - some have a subscription fee and some do not. I think with some of those subscription fees they might be a one time thing, while others are monthly. Before I got my ROKU, I had a subscription to a website that would broadcast on the computer only (no cable, satellite, etc). Since that website is offered on the ROKU (why I got it in the first place), with that monthly subscription fee I can watch the broadcast on the television, which I find much more convenient because I can be moving around the house doing other things rather than tied to my desk to be able to view it. The ROKU has several movie subscription choices available, some very uncommon ones that play old or uncommon movies, but I know Netflix is in there, too. I haven't done it yet, but there's a way to watch YouTube on it and you can also Facebook on the television with it.
