Heavily highlighted hair to medium brown at home?

Is this possible without turning my hair green? My natural color is medium brown, but it has been heavily highlighted for over 20 years. I really want to try coloring my hair brown at home, as I am tired of spending so much money at the salon. I'm also thinking a change would be nice.

I've read horror stories of hair turning green. Has anyone here gone from highlighted hair to brown? Have you done it yourself? Any thoughts/suggestions? Thanks.

I do it all the time and have never had a problem. I have it highlighted up a lot every summer, but then want it darker in the fall and winter. I do it myself with L'Oreal Preference or Excellence. Of course the different shades in your current hair will take the color differently, but I've found it just adds a lot of dimension and really looks more natural than an all over color. In twenty years I've never had it go green.

if you are worried about the results of doing it yourself, I would have your stylist take it down to your natural color once and then maintain it at home with Excellence or another brand that is close to the color of your hair.

At one time the ash shades of some hair color used a green base. I don't think they do that any longer. I would use the L'Oreal Healthy Look as it says it can be used over highlighted hair. To be safe, I would use a colorless filler first you can get in a beauty supply store. This controls the porosity of the hair. Your bleached sections are more porous and that evens it all out. Don't use it without doing a strand test first though to preview your final result. I would stay away from an ash shade and choose a neutral or golden base.

I had my hi lites and low lites taken down by a stylist. I had them for so long and then just wanted a change and to rest my hair.

Thanks, everyone! Going to my natural color is going to be quite a change. I don't mind a few highlights, but the problem is, because I've highlighted for years, my highlights have grown out and given my hair an all over blonde look.

I have considered going to my salon to get my hair darkened first and then maintaining it myself. I have gray coming in at the top/back of my hair. I want to be able to cover them myself, and it is very difficult to do with highlights.

BTW, has anyone ever used a protein filler before coloring their highlighted hair? I had never heard of such a product until I read about it yesterday.
