I agree with Honey. I use 6 pumps for the cleanse and 7 for the final. I have trouble getting the cc through my hair for the cleanse and really have to wet it to spread it.

I have short, fine hair. So my total pumps is 13. I also use an extra pump for leave in with styling cream mixed.

The first cleanse gets out the dirt, oil, and product from your hair. The second cleanse conditions the hair to add moisture and volume. The leave in adds extra moisture, but probably not a lot of moisture like the second cleanse does because you are using more product to completely coat the hair. However, there are people that get great results with one cleanse. I personally feel my hair is more conditioned when I do two cleanses with a leave in. Hope this helps.

It's not really necessary for everyone anyway. I notice a difference in the results I get if I either do a single cleanse or if I don't fully rinse out the 2nd cleanse since I put back in a lot of leave-in anyway. For my (thick, coarse, curly) hair, I think it's hard for me to use enough CC doing just a single cleanse. Give it a try and see how it works for you

On 1/19/2014 Hilary77 said: The first cleanse gets out the dirt, oil, and product from your hair.

I agree with Hilary's description. I rinse out my first cleanse right away to get all the dirt etc. out, and then it's the second cleanse that I leave in for the duration of my shower. Just like you wouldn't put lotion on skin that's dirty and covered in make up -- right? For me, doing 2 cleanses makes a HUGE difference. I can even feel the difference between working in the first batch of CC, vs. the way the second batch of CC just glides right in to my hair. Also, or the first cleanse I try to make sure my hair is as soaking wet as I can before I add the CC (as Chaz recommends) but for some reason it's never as soaking wet for the first cleanse as it is when I add the second batch of CC, I guess because it takes time for your hair to absorb water and get really saturated.

For me, doing 2 cleanses makes my hair feel cleaner and look better. When I first started Wenning Chaz wasn't talking as much about rinsing and repeating, and so I just did one cleanse. At first I was reluctant to waste the product and wanted to stick to just one cleanse, but when I finally became convinced to try rinsing and repeating the feel and look of my hair was so different that I immediately became totally convinced. But if it doesn't feel different to you in the shower and look different after, then save product and stick to one cleanse.

Regarding the leave-in, I feel like that's different than the CC used to cleanse. You only smooth and rake the leave-in through your wet hair, rather than work it in and get it frothy, so it doesn't "bloom" and the consistency stays more lotion-like. Because of this, for me, it acts almost like a styling product or like putting lotion or a treatment on your skin.

You just divide the recommended amount of pumps for your hair length in half. This means that if you use 16 pumps total (for example), you would use 8 pumps for the first cleanse and 8 pumps for the second cleanse. I just wanted to make sure that you knew this.

I was like FinnyMinny, when I first started using WEN the 2 cleanses wasn't talked about as much and when Chaz started emphasizing it more I resisted doing it. When I started, however, my hair felt more moisturized and I could go another day without cleansing. I actually use less with a second cleanse because the product distributes so much better with the second cleanse that I generally use less than the half.

Because I started with oily scalp and hair I was afraid to do the leave in for the first few years. I wasn't very happy with the performance of the sc either. When I finally decided to try a small amount of leave in, the sc worked better and my hair was easier to style and the style stayed longer. I really amped up my leave in when I over-processed my hair and now I really scrunch it in and push it into my ends. The cc works differently when you add water and get it to bloom and when you smooth a small amount into wet hair.

I know there are many that do one cleanse or don't do the leave in - that's something that everyone has to experiment with and see what works best. But, IMO, the best place to start is to follow Chaz' directions first, then try one thing at a time to see if there's a change in your hair.

I was very hesitant to do a second cleanse when Chaz first suggested doing it. I just wanted to stretch my product as much as I could. However, the second cleanse really is a must for me. My hair is thick, coarse, and heavy. It does make a difference and my hair doesn't require so many frequent cleansings. I often alternate my salon shampoo with my Wen but my hair stays cleaner longer with Wen. It really is the best especially for older women who experience loss of shine.

Tri, thanks. You have course hair; you don't use a leave-in?

I just ordered a 32 ounce Wen FIG and Tea Tree Oil (waitlisted). I only have to stretch my upside down bottle for a week or so. If that doesn't last, I have a bottle of Hair One.

Question: the second cleanse is the one you leave in for the duration of your shower? Even if you use two different CCs?

The second cleanse is also the only one that I bother to comb through, but maybe others comb both.

I always use multiple CCs, and I usually use something different on my scalp than on my ponytail, making it 4 different formulas per shower.

Thanks again, Finny!

I was detangling during the first cleanse out of habit. I now have 3 (4 soon) different CCs to play with!

It's the same amount of pumps. With one cleanse you use it all at once, with 2 cleanses you divide the pumps in 1/2 using 1/2 the for the first cleanse and 1/2 for the second.
