Regretting Getting Highlights

I got highlights done in November. Before that, my hair was natural dark blonde. The highlights just made my hair feel so dry. My hair is better now, but it is still not back to the healthy, natural shine that it had before I had it highlighted. I have decided not to put any color or highlights in my hair again. I am going to embrace my natural color, so I can keep my hair as healthy and shiny as possible. My stylist toned down the highlights so they are close to my natural color. Now, I just have to wait a year until these highlights grow out.

I decided to take some inches off and now I am not going to do ANY highlights until the dry stuff grows out. So bummed because my hair was so long and healthy. We shall commiserate together!

My hair is extremely fine. I love getting highlights! It makes my hair feel thick! I actually highlight my own hair so I know how blonde I want to go. I really love the volume the highlights give to my hair.

Maybe try a protein reconstructer (I like Joico K-pak) or Wen Remoist. It will help strengthen & soften you hair. I always do one of these after highlights. I also slather my head in oils before any color/chemical process.

I had 2 inches cut off a little bit ago and it is almost as long as it was before I cut it! Super crazy growth.

I am going to grow my hair out completely and see where I am at with my natural color. I am still going to go back to doing highlights the old way I was doing that still kept my hair healthy (only a shade or two lighter than my natural color, no bleach) but I am going to do less amount of highlights than I use to. I only highlighted the top layer but I am going to do only about half what I did before. And the reason why- I am REALLY loving how beautiful my natural color is coming in. It has its' own natural highlights that are really shining through, figuratively and literally!

I had hues of red and lighter blonde. My daughter is nine. Her hair has sooo many natural highlights. Her hair actually has natural blonde streaks that look like highlights. Her hair is mid-back in length and she has zero split ends. Her hair always looks freshly cut on the ends. I don't think she will ever fully appreciate her hair with Wen because I don't think she remembers using shampoo when she was 7. Lol! I don't think she realizes what a difference Wen makes compared to shampoo.

Thanks for starting this thread, Hilary. I recently had a job interview but they haven't called me so I'm assuming I haven't made it to the next round (they said they'd call this week). Because I won't be on the job market again until the fall (the academic job market has a long cycle since there are hires only at a certain time of each school year), I'm seriously considering dying my hair a crazy dolor, like forest green or navy blue. My only fear is that I'd have to strip my hair a little to get the color to stick, and that I might have to do further damage if I decide to over-dye it to get it back to dark brown again, and that I'd have to wait such a long time to grow out the damaged hair and get my full head of Wen hair back again (it's currently bra-strap length). I know I'll be able to use remoist and oils to condition it after dying it, but I'm just so scared of ruining my Wen hair.

Anyway, thanks for sharing your regret, because I need to focus on that, and not on the temporary fun of dying my hair.

Well, I don't want to make everyone anti-color. I think coloring hair is very necessary if you are wanting a certain look for your hair. I do think that coloring your hair in the gentlest way possible is always the best option. I just had my hair highlighted very heavily with bleach, and coming from natural, non-colored hair, it was quite a difference. If I were to do it again, I would just do a few highlights through the crown instead of doing my whole head. Also, going just a couple shades lighter would have also made a huge difference. my hair is recovering nicely thanks to Wen, though. I do, however, miss my natural color. The bleach just seems to make my hair look dull.
