Bless you! Just reading your post brought back memories of my mother giving me home perms - the smell was something dreadful and then those awful poodle curls (although I think perms have improved since way back in the dark ages). Anyway, I looked around online and found this for you, the explanation and directions seem quite comprehensive and easy to follow. Good luck!

http://www.healthguidance.org/entry/14583/1/How-to-Give-a-Home-Perm.html

I jumped into coloring my hair at home with both feet and never looked back. However, I just got a perm today and was thinking I would never try and to that myself.

They did wash me prior to rolling. It was probably some sort of clarifying shampoo since I had to let it sit on my head for 5 minutes before they scrubbed and rinsed. But they did not dry. They rolled me wet. After that I am no help as they used a "special" perm on me. The stylist had to give her helper special instructions from what she was accustomed to because there is something different about the one she uses on me.

I used to perm my own hair frequently.

Wash the hair, and roll it wet. If her hair is particularly thin or short, you might want to re-wet with water before you start putting solution on it. And by re-wet, I mean use an empty spray bottle and spritz the rollers. This helps the perm solution distribute itself evenly.

Follow the timing of each step as included on the instructions (I assume you got in the box).

Avoid washing, blow drying or using any other heat device for at least one day (2 would be better).

You are a good daughter. I hope you two have some fun today.

Michele

Back in the 80's I gave my sister many perms. She had long hair so I had to piggy back the rollers. Be sure not to put too much hair in the curlers. Also be careful to wrap the ends, otherwise you will end up with frizz. If you are not adept at rolling curlers, practice! I am a child of the 60's so hair rollers are not foreign to me.

Good luck. (if you have never done this, it can be overwhelming)

Good advice here. Keep her hair wet as mentioned as it will start to dry. Protect her face and skin from the solution at all times. Before you use the solution spread a layer of Vaseline all around the edge of the hair line then use the long cotton ball like strips to lay over the Vaseline and press. Have her hold a hand towel over her face during application. Redo the Vaseline step before using the neutralizer. You may need to trim some frizzy ends off. It should be fine, just take your time.

oh my gosh ladies...I'm going to be a pro..........................(not!)

I wash and set her hair once a week so rolling isn't an issue. I did read about keeping the hair wet, will have to get a spray bottle and I think I'm going to need a roll of cotton for around the face, forgot about that. I think I have Vaseline too so I need to put that all together and best advice, read the directions.

It was so easy when she could walk to the car, get her in and walk into the salon, now due to just slowing down that's not possible anymore (just need to accept that). That's the worse part of getting old, just seeing the "stages" of age, first you're so mobile then something just "stops" you and lately it's getting more and more with mom. Oh well, guess I'm happy I can do all these things for her. When she was in a rehab facility years ago, there were people in there without any family presence, that must be hard on them. The one lady had a son but he lived in another state and just came to visit only 2x a year, he was wealthy enough that he paid for her permanent stay but I think having someone come and visit and do things is good.

Probably Saturday I'm looking at but I'll let you know how it turns out.

Perm..... check, rods.... check, papers.... check need cotton and vaseline

(if you have never done this, it can be overwhelming)

This is what is overwhelming....makeup in my tote bag (all new and comprised of Clinique, Lancôme and Estee lauder) shouldn't have been carrying around with me, belonged in the safe haven of my bathroom BUT a 3/4 full bottle of windshield washer spilled into my leather Coach tote and soaked through the full bag of makeup. Did you know that the 2 of them do not mix....yes, everything was trashed, even the lipsticks, somehow soaked up into the tubes and even the compacts of bronzers are not completely sealed, that stuff got into those. Oh well, that was one day last week. ...and my coach tote, washed the entire inside out, left it to dry and didn't ruin the leather at all....that was the good news.

Then...on Friday last week, my ceiling tiles fell allover my merchandise and my store was flooded due to a cracked pipe upstairs. What a mess to say the least, it's going to be weeks before everything gets put back to normal...oh yes, I have insurance but don't forget I have a deductible, a mess and a headache.

so......a perm will be a piece of cake and ask me so when will I have any fun??? I guess I'm having it now!

Hope your 2014 is starting out better than mine.

oh and one more, washing clothes on Sunday and for some reason didn't check my pant pockets and sure enough a tube of lipstick was clanking around in my dryer (washer ok) but red everywhere and I mean everywhere. Besides ruining some of the clothes, spent a lot of time removing all the red from the drum of the dryer.....I thought that Oxi Clean pretreatment for stains gets lipstick out, must work on hard surfaces too...it does, all clean.

I think I'm done.....someone else's turn now.

What memories this brings. I can remember when I was maybe 5 or 6 and my mother gave me a home perm. Once it was done, she picked me up to look in the mirror and I let out this blood-curdling scream. I can still hear myself!!! Never again.

I think clean hair, free of gels, spray and such is better than freshly washed hair. I would wash it a day or two before. This keeps the natural oils on the scalp, and no burning. But follow box direction.

section the wet hair in 6 sections. from, forehead to crown is one section, (make section slightly narrower than perm rod). then do the same with front side sections and the three back sections. Kind of like you would set your hair for a "bubble" in the old days.

Keep a spray bottle handy. Use 2 papers per rod. Make sure all the ends are in the paper and not kinked. The ends must be flat and enclosed in paper. Roll the rods with even pressure. Be firm but do not pull or stretch hair. People tend to wrap hair around rod, or roll tight when they get to the end. Even pressure, wrap straight. Dont group those ends together at bottom. Do not take a lot of hair. Remember rods that are too full do not perm evenly. They tend to be loose. Rods that are wrapped too thin, and too tight tend to kink and get a tight curl.

Tilt hair back when applying solution. Apply evenly, and slowly so it absorbs evenly. Apply the solution all over, then go over again. Just be even and light with first application

The most important part is rinsing and neutrilizing the hair.

You can apply petroleum jelly around entire skin around hairline. Then apply cotton. This is to prevent running of solution and burning the skin. Try not to get solution on scalp if possible.

To do test curl, unwind a crown rod, and a side rod there should be an "S" pattern.

rewrap curls. And rinse, dry and neutrilize as directed

Nantucket

Let me know how it comes out. Special care needs to be taken with diabetics, and people with hormonal issues like hyperthyroid. Also, certain medications can hinder a perm. Since I do not know her mobility and health issues. I will give you safety tips. make sure you use vasoline on the neck, around the ears and face. Perm solution is watery, it runs. Elderly, and people with sensitive issues can burn. Change the towel around her neck after applying solution and wipe neck with damp cloth to remove solution. Make sure your mom has a towel handy to cover face in case solution runs in face or eyes. Have rinse available just in case gets in eyes. Milk neutrilizes the perm solution so rub with milk if it burns.

I imagine home perms are a little more diluted than professional perms. I know a common problem was the perm solution would get on neck towel, the towel wouldn't be changed until after perm. When the towel was removed client had burns on neckl line from solution.
