The first time I tried TT I couldn't stand it and put it away and didn't use it again for about 2 years. Then I kept reading how good it was for fine, thin hair so I tried it again and little by little the scent stopped bothering me. I never mix it with anything else, but as someone else suggested, that might be an option to get yourself used to the scent. When I use something where the scent bothers me I feel like I can smell it forever, so I can sympathize with you on that. I never thought I'd like TT but it's the only formula that works for me. I guess you would have to give it a try.

Tea Tree Scent Question

Hi All -

How strong would you say the Tea Tree scent is? I have smelled tea tree products before, like a spray for my dog someone recommended when she was having itchy hot spots, and also 100% pure tea tree oil drops from Whole Foods. Both products made me want to throw up they were so strong and lingered for days! I really want to try TT because my hair is looking horrible this winter and I think it needs more moisture but I can't deal with something that smells bad. I am very sensitive to smells and get bad headaches.

To give you guys a picture of what I use and like: POM is my staple because I love, love, love the scent and it makes my hair happy. SAM is my second fav. but makes my hair a tiny bit dry. You can smell both of these for about an hour after the shower and then the smell dissipates. I've used CA and LAV, LAV is VERY strong and although my hair has loved it in the past I cannot get past the smell which seems to linger for a while. BGT made me sneeze and gave me a headache because it lingered for DAYS, even if I used it for first cleanse only.

So, TT gurus, what say you? I tried FIG 2+ years ago and at the time it was a little too heavy for my hair and I didn't care for the scent but it didn't linger so I guess I could try it again. However, there is a SAM, POM, TT trio for sale now and also a TT/SAM duo that I would buy. I have a lot of POM.

Another option on the table is to try Kids Watermelon because I loved how easily the rice based BGT rinsed but I'm not sure WK will give me enough moisture. I'm doing oil treatments 2+ times per week and use 1/2-1 small pump of CC for a leave in. SC turns my hair to straw. My hair is turning into frizz central in this cold weather, especially my ends and around my crown, and I need some help!

I ordered it once in the TT,SAM set. I cant handle it on its own. It is VERY strong and medicinal smelling.

TT mixed with BGT, however, was ok. But alone, the TT was overpowering.

It's not the TT oil itself that is overpowering to me. It's the other essential oils combined with the menthol that really puts it over the top. I'm sensitive to smells too. It's the combo of the TT, eucalyptus oil and the menthol that really makes the smell. I agree with you LAV smells horrible to me, and I absolutely love the smell of lavender itself. It's ruined by the other smells though. I finally got used to the TT CC and it doesn't smell as bad as Fig does ( which smells like cherry cough syrup to me). I use the CCs I need based on performance and I'm just grateful I'm finally to the point where I can use the ones I like the smell of the best.

I love the kids because they don't have menthol or any other resinous essential oils in them. The Apple is the lightest scent. For my hair they are about equivalent to TT as far as moisture.

If you are having frizz problems though Fig is the most moisturizing. I used it for my second cleanse for a long time and now I alternate it. You could try doing oil treatments instead of switching CCs. Try coconut oil. The Wen oils are great but they tend to be strongly scented.

Andhours, I'm a new convert to TT cc...I've used and loved the oil since forever. Personally, I think the cleansing conditioner is much much lighter in scent than the oil and doesn't linger too terribly long. However, I may be jaded--When I lived in Australia, tea tree was in everything!! And everything just reeked of it at times(no offense to anyone, it just was overwhelming for my migraines)....This cc is definitely *not* like that...its much more subtle and kind of understated, IMHO.

I've used it by itself for both cleanses and mixed with other cc's....It works great either way so take your pick. I can say for myself that my hair does grow much faster using the tea tree cleansing conditioner along with my regular lineup--I've got just about an inch of regrowth in 4 weeks! Pretty unbelievable since my hair grows soooo slow normally.

I'm definitely a tea tree convert now

I really like Tea Tree CC but I would classify the scent as strong. However, it is more of a menthol scent to me than tea tree. My comparison is a a bottle of TT essential oil from a herbal shop. The two smells are both strong but very different. I don't mind the TT CC but I really don't like the essential oil at all.

But scent is pretty personal. If you think it might be too much for you, you're probably right about that.

It probably smells very similar to those Tea Tree products you mentioned you smelled before, it's a typical Tea Tree scent which is strong. It's like Sweet Almond Mint amped-up. It's a bit too masculine and medicinal smelling for my tastes.

If you need more moisture you could mix TT with either SAM or POM. To me, TT isn't as strong a scent as LAV, although I love both, but I'm sort of like chickenmoo, I'm used to the smell. Although I was raised in Arkansas not Australia, I was an asthmatic child long before there were inhalers and the method to relieve my wheezing was slathering mentholatum to which my Mom added tea tree on my chest and back and putting Vicks into the humidifier, so I grew up with the scent.

Maybe I should give it another try but just can't get myself to invest in an entire 16 oz. bottle!!!

The tea tree scent is pretty strong. If you like Pom, you might like the seasonals. Have you tried the seasonals? Also, if you liked the performance of BGT, you will probably like the Wen kids. I think the Wen kids cc's are great. They are not drying. They are not the most moisturizing, but they do provide moisture.

Hi I've never smelled Tea Tree oil on its own so I can't compare. I used to think the Tea Tree formula was very strong when I first tried it, but it doesn't really bother me anymore. I think it fades quickly. To give you an idea I hate the smell of Lavender and Fig but love Pom and SAM. Like others say, you can mix the Tea Tree if it is too strong. Personally, I think the kids formulas are really really moisturizing and the watermelon scent smells amazing so I'd recommend that. Good luck!

Thanks so much for the replies, everyone! I really appreciate it. Buying products sight unseen is really difficult. I am waffling between getting the TT/SAM duo, a WK Watermelon CC, or a Fig set. The ends of my hair need moisture like crazy but even after 2 oil treatments a week for several months my hair is still very oily at the top. CA does nothing for it. My hair is a different shade up top than the middle and ends of my hair due to the grease.

I would like to try the Fig Sweet Orange oil but have never used a remoist and I don't see when I'd ever have the time to do it honestly, so the current 3 piece deal doesn't really work for me. I want my hair to grow faster which is another reason I'm revisiting the TT issue. If it doesn't linger and I can do a first cleanse of TT and cover it up with POM or SAM I'd be good to go. Does anyone do that? I know there's no guarantees but, can anyone like 99% be sure that my sensitive sniffer wouldn't be bothered by TT an hour after my shower is over if I only used it for first cleanse? I don't have unlimited funds, unfortunately, and I was also thinking of trying to get a round brush.

I'm super sensitive to smells and there are a ton of stores in the mall (candles, bath & body, etc.) that I can't even walk anywhere NEAR without sneezing like a maniac. The first time I smelled my sister's bottle of TT (it's her absolute favorite) I gagged and ran away. But now I use it as part of EVERY cleanse and I panic if I think I'll run out. To me, this means that the scent isn't physically bothersome to me (like the candle store), but rather that I had never smelled anything like it before and my first reaction was YUCK. I guess I just got used to it. Now that I use it all the time, I don't think it smells GOOD, but it's a familiar smell that I enjoy smelling because it's comforting to me as it's linked in my mind to cleansing with Wen and that luxurious experience. I wouldn't want to walk around smelling like TT all day, but I really enjoy it's presence in my shower. I think you should give it a try, not just once, but a few times to see if it grows on you.

The special event trio of POM, SAM and TT is a good price and would be a good way to try tea tree and get 2 cleansers that you know you like. I don't think the kids formulas will have the moisture you are needing.

As for your dry ends, make sure you are doing what Chaz has been saying - "push" the cc into the ends - making sure you are getting the ends fully saturated with the cleanser, both during the cleanses and when you put in the leave in.

First time I tried tea tree I could not handle it! The smell was overwhelming and not pleasant to me - so I used it once and never tried it again. Pretty sure I ranted in here about how much I disliked the smell of TT. This was also before the rinse and repeat days so I'm pretty sure I just cleansed once. Well, I ended up getting a discovery pack that had multiple scents and immediately "gifted" the TT to my mother. Hers ALSO just sat in her bathroom. I think she also used hers once. I kid you not when I say this thing sat there for at least 3 years. I would see it every time I visited lol.

Meanwhile, I notice that every time Chaz is on TT sells out first! People rave about it - talk about how it is their staple etc etc. So I begin to think I didn't give it a fair shot and ask my mom if I can have it back (since clearly she wasn't using it). So I give it another shot. Ah-mah-zing! Now I can say,the smell probably bothered me a little the first time once again, just a little the second time, by the third or fourth I was actually looking FORWARD to the scent. So go figure! After completely shunning this scent for YEARS of WEN use -now it is also my go-to staple formula! Definitely give it an honest 30-day trial! I don't think you'll regret it!

On 1/13/2014 andhourspass said:

I find Fig, which is my staple, extremely strong and borderline offensive to my nose. Depending on how I use it, the smell can linger for an hour. I'm trying Tea Tree and Lavender in a few weeks when they get delivered.

The fun thing about Wen and the various products and formulas is that you can experiment. Try TT as a first cleanse and POM as your second. That's what I will be doing Wen I get my new bottles.

As for the Re Moist, I have had great results using it quickly in the shower. The best results are when I use it and put a shower cap over my hair for most of the day, but a quick shower use is nothing to sneeze at.

I am definitely one of those folks who can't go past Bath & Body Works, Yankee Candle, perfume dept in Macy's, etc. without going into a sneezing fit and getting a massive headache. Glad I'm not the only one who suffers from that! In fact, I got into my friend's car yesterday to run an errand with her and she had those air freshener things on her AC vents. We had to drive with the windows down because I felt sick to my stomach from it

Sounds like I really need to give TT a try. I want my hair to grow faster - it's getting long but seems to have sort of stopped 3/4 way down my back - and from what I've heard TT makes hair grow like a weed! I also have chronic problems with being very oily up at the crown of my head but my ends being dry, even just 12 hours after cleansing. This is less of a problem if I am using soft water when I go on vacation but unfortunately I have hard water. I rinse very, very thoroughly (maybe too much?) and only put a little leave-in on my midshaft to ends.

I am still doing SAP or POM oil treatments twice a week and those have helped a lot but I'm almost out of both oils so I need to decide which one to repurchase at this time. Ahhh! My hair really soaks up the POM but personally I like the smell of SAP much better so I may go with that. Is that terrible? LOL. I also want to buy a Wen brush and am trying to decide if I need the medium or large. Chaz says he uses the Medium on all his people but recent posts here indicate the Large is easier to use for people with longer hair. Too many options! Thanks for your continued support and advice, you all are the best!

TT is very strong smelling IMO. The scent doesn't really go away, it stays around. Sometimes it really bothers me.
