Semi - Perm Hair Color

I have silver chemo hair (after chemo I got someone else's hair, with a life of it's own) that I cannot color with permanent hair color for a couple more months. My Doctor suggested I use semi-permanent color for awhile. I would appreciate your advise on which brand to buy. To be used at home. I always used L'Oreal Preference in the past but am not sure what to use now. Also does anyone know how well it covers? And how long it usually lasts?

The brand that carries your favorite color! Most of them cover the same and work the same. The only real difference are the colors. I'm with Vidaal Sassoon now that I've found their medium vibrant red hair color! It isn't permanent, so you can take chances. Start fresh with your hair and embrace the change. My boss' hair was the same after her chemo. Now she proudly wears her salt and pepper, pixie hair. She loves the new shortcut and how easy life is. She has lived through a tragic house fire, lightning burnt everything including the foundation and the bricks crumbled to touch, and breast cancer. She says that life is not worth all the stress we create!

Loreal makes one called Healthy Looks (I think) and Garnier makes one too. I have tried both and like them equally.

Why doesn't he want you to use permanent. I'm asking because Natural Instincts is not semi-permanant, it's demi-permanant and it does have peroxide developer, but it's low volume. Between 1-3% depending on the color.

Natural Instincts. But I've found even with sulfate free shampoos/conditioners it lasts about 4 weeks.

Please do a test sample on your hair before you color with semi-permanent. If you have more than 30% silver, the product may not saturate well to give you good coverage.

I can't find it anywhere........are they reformulating? going to new packaging? This has been a mystery for the past couple months.............

I will do that because I'd say I am 90% silver. Around the front It is pure silver and near the bottom it's a little darker silver. Do I just snip a piece off and put color on it?

Yes, you can try color on a snip of hair or just try a spot behind the ears where it isn't noticable. Be sure to test on silver hair.

I use Natural Instincts as well. They did change packaging awhile ago, but pretty much all drugstores have it and Drugstore.com has it. I use black and it never rinses out which is fine with me. Tried a permanent color once and the smell almost knocked me out.

I have the same issues--finished all the chemo treatments and when my hair grew back it was very curly---yahooo--but as it got longer it grew back stick straight, like it was before cancer zombies, but the color is the same as yours, from being a medium brown. It's been a year out of chemo and radiation for me. And I thought about coloring but am so leery of all the horrendous chemicals in hair coloring---had enough chemicals to last a life time in the 5 months of chemo. Also your hair is still very fragile and how horrible to have it fall out from hair dye!!!! Have you thought about trying organic hair coloring? I've heard good things about it and it does cover the grey better too. Don't have any specific brands in mind as I'm not going to get into that cycle of coloring, grow out and coloring again. Just happy to have my hair back and will treat it gently!

I really like Natural Instincts also. It is long lasting and is gentle. Permanent color is way too rough on my hair.

Wagirl. I remember you from the cancer survivors thread. I was told by my doctor and nurse navigator to use semi- permanent color for the same reasons you stated, The chemo hair is delicate and real hair color might damage it. It does wash out in about a month. I am having a hard time dealing with the new color. It is very silver and so much of a change for me. Don't get me wrong I am so grateful it came back in nice and thick. The curl I could do without but I assume that will get cut off in time. I am going for my first haircut tomorrow. I might like it better afterwards. But in the meantime I am thinking about a temporary color. Not sure yet. Thanks for you thoughts.

Liz---I remember you too!! Things got pretty weird on that board-not the same as before, I'm sad to say. My hair is mostly a dark grey with silver highlights at the temple--kind of like Maude had--from the tv show? I have had more compliments about the color than I ever did with my original med mousey brown. Could you send me some of your curlMine is so straight. Been trying all my life to MAKE it curl; it kind of bends. Am going this weekend for my 3rd haircut in the year of my new hair. I did have very curly hair as it grew out and with each cut, it got straighter. So glad my hair is back too but it still is a challenge!!

Pam, I stopped reading that thread because it was getting weird. It also was making me depressed for some reason and I needed to move on. Like you my cancer is gone and I have lots of things to do. I'd be happy to send you some of the dumb curl. I had body before, just some wave but this is terrible. I look like a silver poodle. LOL. I will get it cut and go out without my wig and see what the response is. Time will tell. I will let you know. It is really a pretty sparkly silver and thick (thank goodness). Just an adjustment. I have also gained weight from treatments (only two more Herceptin treatments) and that does not help. But I will be myself (or maybe better) in no time. Thanks for understanding. Hugs.

I just got back from my Hair Stylist. I have gone to her for years and we are good friends. Her opinion was not to color my hair at all. She said it was beautiful and I should own it....So I appreciate your suggestion and if I wake up one day and cant stand being gray I know what to use. Thanks everyone.
