My own personal rule is no white pants, shoes or handbags after Labor Day. I don't know the "official rule" though.

I agree. I do wear winter white......but I believe that winter white is "officially" acceptable. I think many people will say "there are no rules anymore"......they're such rebels! :^O

Thank goodness that rule is passe. Personally I love white and after living in Fl so many years, and wearing white all year round I really missed being able to wear it after Labor Day. What's the big deal with it? I never figured it out why it's such a no no.B-)

I'll default to my own personal belief and the TLC show "What not to Wear": IT'S OK TO WEAR WHITE AFTER LABOR DAY! I think it's in the beginning credits on one of their signs.

That "rule" has gone by the way side in the last 10 or 20 years. My 19 yr old cousin had never even heard of it and had to ask what it meant when watching WNTW! And she usually tells me what's up on all the fashion!

Now, I'm not saying I'll wear my linen white pants in January, but white is fine as long as the fabric is weather appropriate. Heck, if we lived in the south or in California, we could wear all our summer stuff almost year round!!!

I will also wear "winter white" but not cotton pants or skirts. They have to be in fabrics of the season for me. I have worn "winter white" suits since the 80's when I owned many designers suits made of beautiful wool crepe or wool gabardine .............. still love those fabrics in winter white but cotton pants do not look the same as they are usually "optic white" and that is still a real fashion "faux pax" in my decorum book.

In Texas, we wear white--especially cotton--way after Labor Day. It's still in the 90's most days up until Oct.

I agree that "winter white" would be the way to go in pants - not cotton white or skirts as stated before. A nice cream/khaki can be pulled off for all winter now. I'd pack the cotton white pants and stick with rayon or whatever other fabric.

Absolutely! Seems these days, the rule is, there are no rules. I personally don't love white pants (unless I am skinny) Last year I saw women wear true white pants with black turtle neck sweaters, white large hobo bags, black pointy heels...IMO it looked very stylish. I can't really keep up with what is in or out anymore anyways.....I try to look fashionable, but I still basically do what I want. Actually, I think New York and Company had an ad using those colors too.

I think it's fine to wear winter white anytime - however, unless you live in a very warm climate (Florida, Texas, etc.), the white cottons and white shoes get put away this weekend. We're leaving tomorrow on a cruise to Canada/NE - not packing anything white - it we were going to the Caribbean, however, it would be packed for sure.

Living in Phoenix, my rule is no white once it gets below 90 degrees, seriously. That means I can do white until October. Start wearing white in April right around Easter.

no rules for me! B-)

the temperature is more my guide than rules. If it is 85 and my white jeans are looking good and what I want to wear even though it is September, it's all okay with me. Now, I may tone down the top I wear with them to a more autumn-colored hue and not the lime green or bright turquoise tops....so white is not the no-no for me at all.

You bet I will! It's going to be 98 degrees today and 101 tomorrow at my house in San Diego, which equates to about 85 at the ocean. White reflects the sun and does not retain heat as much as darker colors, so I tend to go with the weather.

(However, I wouldn't be caught dead in white shoes, ever.)

I'd have to put half of my wardrobe away when it will be hot here for another couple of months.

There are no rules anymore. I personally wear what works for the weather. We have summer here for quite awhile yet, so I will wear my white capris for another month or two at least.
