Do Not Buy a Dell Studio Laptop at Staples

My daughter's boyfriend is a computer technician at Staples, and he was telling me last night that he's sent over 7 of these laptops back to Dell because the computer just stops working altogether after about two weeks of use. He has no reason why this is happening. Pretty scarey considering I purchased mine from Dell and so far so good. I haven't had any problems. He's not sure whether it's just the batch they made for Staples or whether it will start happening from buying it from other sources.

Just thought I'd pass this along. Now everytime I turn on this laptop I pray it turns on, lol lol

The other day I got one of those little sale booklets that Dell sends out all the time. Anyway, I was looking at this new Studio model and it looks SO cool! I want one. I want the 17" one. Geez, with all it had (fully loaded plus) the cost was only $999...I paid that much for my current Dell 15.4" laptop about 16 months ago, that had a lot on it for the time, and it's only half the laptop this is. *drool*

I love the purple color too!

I wonder if Staples has some models made for them (as many of the electronics stores do) and something just went bad. I usually get my Dell stuff directly also.

i have a friend who purchased a notebook from staples and paid quite a hefty sum for it, and she was told it was brand new.

she was shocked to find someone else had purchased and returned her notebook to staples, because that persons personal information, documents, and various software product registrations were still in her notebook.

she was furious and returned it to staples and got a full refund, but before she did that she filed various reports on the internet.

i am not surprised at all.

i recall being in front of a circuit city store once and the store manager was outside of the store having a cigarette. when he saw 2 men carrying in a large sony television to circuit city. he immediately called someone in the store from his cell phone, and i clearly heard him warn them to pass the word not to refund any money to 2 men carrying in the large sony television.. again i was not surprised.

unfortunately not everyone is honest these days when it comes to high price technology products......so i try and be as careful as i can when making a large purchase, and really hope it was a wise decision in my favor.

Chickenbutt I bought mine through Dell, and so far I've had very good luck with it. No problems at all. I really like this laptop. I paid more then Staples price but I extended my warranty to 4 years and added a few upgrades. I also got a wireless Dell printer for free plus interest free financing all for 1,400.00. Wasn't too shabby actually. I'm just glad I didn't buy it from Staples or through QVC. I like the interest free financing I was qualified for.

I'm shocked that someone would be stupid enough to return a computer with their personal information still on it.

hi glb613,

yes i agree with what you replied to, but just the fact that staples would have the audacity and knowingly sell someone a so called brand new computer, when they clearly knew that computer was used, and previously also purchased by a previous staples consumer is not only being dishonest, but it also constitutes fraud.

another fraudulent act would be for staples to erase the hard drive and reload everything again so that no personal information was on that notebook. yes the previous purchaser should have erased all their information before returning the notebook to staples, but since that person didn't, it seems that staples did not care to try and cover their deceit and fraud, and just rushed to resell the used notebook to another unsuspecting staples consumer at regular price no less.

i would imagine buying directly from a computer manufacturer, would ensure you are definitely receiving an unused item, especially if you personally custom configure your specs yourself.

Maybe the person that returned it did a good job packaging it up again, so it looked new. If you return an item and say it was never opened, then I do believe that it would be okay to sell it as new.

I suppose that scam could happen anywhere if the customer returning it was deceitful.

I just got a Dell email that the Studio line is now available in the Dell Outlet ;)
Maybe all those Staples and/or QVC returns?? The Outlet is the way I would go anyway ---- haven't gotten a bad one yet (knock on wood)!!

We have 2 Dell's, love them. I got an email on this new one, read the reviews from purchasers and they weren't good. The one that struck me was "very poorly made", that was enough for me. Too bad, nicely loaded and love the colors but no thanks.

I'm still debating between the Dell and HP all-in-one desktop. The prices at the Dell outlet aren't that good and HP doesn't have any. If they do get lower, I may buy one. Another way to go is to find online coupons or promo codes. Right now there is one for $400 off any HP notebook $999 and up. Go to Google and type in HP coupons.

I had a refurbished computer from Dell, I gave it to my Mom when I upgraded and it's still running after 10 years. It is one way to get a good computer at a better price. I heard on TV yesterday that only 5% of returned computers are actually defective.

That is probably very true. A lot of problems could be user error, and out of frustration they return it.

I would have no problems purchasing a refurb Mac.

disdatmac: In all likelihood, I'll buy a refurb Mac when I finally decide to upgrade. You get some great deals, the refurb process they describe sounds thorough, and you can get Apple Care just as though the unit was new.

and the HP outlet prices always seem to be higher than what you can get them at the BB stores on sale. Once in awhile I see a good price for a machine at the Dell outlet --- not that I'm in the market for one but I like to go window shop regularly.
