lumbar stenosis

I need some help. I have severe lumbar stenosis and have been through the physical therapy route but things have gotten worse. Today the doctor said that I need a lumbar laminectomy and fusion. I am torn and troubled. Has anyone had this on the board and can you help me with the decision? How difficult is this surgery and if you had it, are you glad that you did ?
