Just found out I have Hypothyroidism can you give

Me any advice, educate me. Is that why I am gaining weight even though I was on a diet?  I've felt lazy for a long time. I'm on pills now for it. Synthroid.

Will I lose weight now? I have a lot of health problems so I'll have problem deciphering symptoms going away. For example I've always suffered with migraines. Give advice please.

@Yesyesyes568   I had thyroid surgery 21 years ago.   Thyroid effects everything you mentioned..  Hair loss, weight gain, tired, just to name a few.  You might lose weight, but I know for me  , it took awhile for them to get the right amount in blood.  I think it was around 6 months.   I never gained weight , but that is a sign of it.  I would bet that is the reason you could not lose on a diet.

Follow your Dr's advice because thyroid effects everything, including your heart.  Once they get you on the right amount you will be fine.  You would be surprised how many people have it.  Get a pill holder so you don't forget to take your synthroid.  Take it in morning and don't eat for at least 15 min.  You can drink just don't eat.

Good luck to you!

You should feel better soon.  It also should help you regulate your weight while dieting.

First, I hope you feel better soon.  Synthroid is very common and helps most.  There is also a program I'd like to suggest to you.  It's a book that comes with an "exercise" CD - the author is Teresa Tapp.  Her program moves your internal muscles.  It is not a "workout" that you jump, run, etc..It's simply lifting and tapping your legs and arms in unison.  Hard to explain.  It is very simple and very effective.  She has a PBS show and I'm sure you can find her on Amazon.  Please try !  My BFF has thyroid issues, takes Synthroid but has been able to reduce her dose because of this program.  Very best of luck, Hope you are feeling better very soon. (also check with your MD about vit D and B levels...)

I've been on Synthroid since 1994.  My advice is to make sure to get the brand name Synthroid and not the generic.  That's what I've always been told.

It might take awhile to get the right dosage, but I'm hoping you'll feel much better.

Why is it, when I have a 50/50 guess at something, I'm always 100% wrong?

Re: Just found out I have Hypothyroidism can you give

I was diagnosed in May with hypothyroidism.  From all I've read here in many posts from many others who also have it are taking Synthroid.  I must be the only person who was prescribed to take the generic version called levo thyroxine.  My Nurse Practioner sees me for my gyno exams.  Her office sees women for other issues too including endocronology issues, updating immunization shots. My nurse has not contacted me yet to check to see how I'm doing on my new drug, how I'm feeling etc.

I told her I wanted to get back to her office but to see the specialist I saw for this potential problem a couple of years ago when they suspected I have hypothyroidism.  I had an appt to see the speicalist but I cancelled it.

I'm calling her office tomorrow to get back into seeing her.  It truly seems again from all I've read herre that those on Synthroid have much better results once the proper doseage level is administered.

My weight gain is what really bothers me the most.  After 4 months I see no change in this.  I'm not at all sure the dosage of levo is right for me.  It also really bothers me that my nurse nor the specialist have contacted me to check on me.

I take levothyroxine, which is the generic version of Synthroid.  I've taken this for many years.  I seem to remember that it took a couple of months to get the dosage right, but I haven't had to change the dosage since then.

Re: Just found out I have Hypothyroidism can you give

I was "allegedly" diagnosed with this during my first visit to a new doctor. I didn't get to see the dr because their policy for new patients is to see the PA first. So, after bloodwork which showed one thyroid level +1 from normal she prescribes levo. I was skeptical and got a second opinion from an endocrinologist. All readings were normal, no levo needed. Now I see the specialist every 6 months to get blood tests just to make sure. Everything is fine, but if for some reason I DO have thyroid issues I am at least seeing a dr who specializes in those disorders.

Thyroid levels can fluctuate -- work with a specialist who can identify what's normal for you and monitor your condition.
