Probably the lack of a good understanding of healthy nutrition and exercise through educational practices, too. There is probably very few programs to encourage this type of good healthy behavior, I would suspect. Like they say...birds of a feather.. @software

Bad habits.

People cook a certain way, like their mom & grandma with no regard to nutrition.

Plenty of fresh vegetables in the summer but it's all either fried or cooked with bacon fat, or fatback or some other kind of animal fat.   Also too much sugar.    Iced tea full of sugar, and the south is known for their desserts.  Fried pies, cakes, cobblers.    Lots of family reunions, church suppers.

The south is also called the "stroke belt".    Lots of cardiac disease, which is primarily hereditery but it sure doesn't help if you eat & smoke all day.

There is also a certain cultural view that "thick" is attractive.

I live in Alabama, just saying.

@software

You bring up a good point.

That's when people will say, 'it's genetic' when referring to their modern-day illnesses.  Their mother cooked that way; their grandmother cooked that way; great-grandma cooked that way....of course it's natural to think it's genetic when this happens, but we all know fresh food is fresh food.  It's amazing when the sick go against family tradition, 'genetics' suddenly melt away & they suddenly are healthy...proving it was never 'genetic' to begin with.

Wow, a negative survey that left out West Virginia!   But then they were looking at metro areas, and that left us out.   Yay!

      That's true, in medical statistics circles there is a section of the sound that is referred to as Heart Attack Alley because the prevelance of heart attacks is many times greater than the national average.
