Home remedies for cough and congestion?

Cough and cold meds have a terrible effect on me - I cannot tolerate them.

What's the best remedy for cough and congestion?

Thank you.

I've heard, and not experienced that if you boil a small amount of water and drop in 2 drops of oregano oil, then put a towel over your head to make a humidifier effect, then breathe in the moisture with the oregano oil, it clears congestion.  Hope it works for you.  Let us all now.

I use fresh ginger a lot. Either throw a few pieces into a smoothie, make chai tea (I use SoDelicious coconut creamer instead of milk) or put boiling water over a few small pieces of it and add lemon and honey. I'm also completely addicted to Prince of Peace ginger candy and have been known to wipe out an entire bag. I think it helps during the winter months..

Also fresh garlic and onion...toss some of that into your giant roast....

@Quse

I've been drowning myself in Roobio tea. I normally drink a lot of it, but the last couple of days I've been adding honey and lemon. I don't use creamer in my tea.  I do have fresh ginger - perhaps I'll add a little when I steep the tea.

@house_cat  Traditional Medicinals has some excellent herbal teas for coughs, congestion, colds, sore throats.  Beathe Easy, Gypsy Cold Care, Throad Coat

Some drugstores carry them but Amazon has them.

this works well---

hot water

slice of lemon

slice of fresh ginger, that you kind of smash slightly

steep for about 15 minutes

strain and add a bit of honey and reheat if needed

and  have been known to add a slosh of whiskey too. ;-)

@Pook

I'm on it!  (sans the whisky - sounds good but I don't tolerate that any better than I tolerate cold meds, unfortunately)

Thank you.

Re: Home remedies for cough and congestion?

Hi @house_cat,

I'm so very sorry that you are not feeling well. Smiley Sad

If you are feeling up to it, some home made chicken soup with a bit of cayenne (red pepper) flakes can help.

I've done that when I am not feeling well. The pepper helps to decongest you and helps to get your sinuses to open up.

If you don't feel like making home made soup, you can try adding some red pepper flakes to some canned chicken soup.

I rub Vick's vapor rub on the soles of my feet and put on a heavy pair of socks at bedtime. It works like a charm to break up the congestion.

I make a pot of chili and a pot of any chicken soup.

Works for our family.

@Toppers3

I have homemade broth in the freezer.

I don't have much appetite, but I could add some cayenne to the broth and sip it for lunch.
