Hello I am hoping to get some ideas while I wait to get into the ENTs office Nov 18! soonest available appointment they have grrrr.

What I have been experiencing is really got me stumped.  Last week I met a friend for lunch....drank water thur out and kept feeling so dry my voice got hoarse...and choked some even.  My throat felt painful....swollen up....like I have a burr or a pinecone stuck in there!  I didn't talk at all for days....used my humidifer.  Drank lot's of water....did salt water rinse/gargaling....ate chicken soup.  After 3 days it seemed better.

Now a few days later....on Monday my ear left one is plugged up feeling like I am underwater or in a air plane.  In fact it was so much so that I was getting dizzy.  I know I have allergies (per my doctor) so I take one Allegra (no sudafed kind) per day everyday.

I decided to pick up some flonaze from the drugstore yesterday....and the 30mg (lowest dose) of sudafed.  I used both in afternoon.  I could feel the fluid moving in my ear ...left one is the one that feels swollen shut.  After awhile this really helped....actually slept without getting dizzy and could get up and have a cup of coffee like normal today.

I took nothing but my normal meds today....armour thyroid and 1 allegra....by 12noon my throat was becoming inflamed/raw again....ear closing up somewhat.   It was time to use the flonaze again so I did....took some advil for throat pain inflammation.  Had chicken soup...gargaled with salt water again.  Oh and one key thing....I didn't speak to anyone prior today...I am home alone.

I am no stranger to vertigo/dizziness issues.....but this throat stuff too is just totally out of the blue.

Could this throat stuff be caused by post nasal drip??Allergies??

I decided to order that MyPurMist device...says it's really good for this kind of thing.  While I am waiting to see the ENT does anyone have any other suggestions for products like certain cough drops or home remedies for throat they could suggest??

IF you read this far I appreciate it and hopefully it makes sense LOL....thanks for any help

Re: Ears/Nose/Throat Problems

Yes, it could be allergies.  Also, something else to check out, it could be the allegra.  Cough, sore throat, loss of voice are less common side-effects of that product.

I had something similar happen to me years ago, from Zyrtec.

I would not wait for the ENT. I'd keep the appointment but get into the GP asap .

Re: Ears/Nose/Throat Problems

OK, so you are pretty good in the morning, but awhile later after you take the Allegra you start to have these problems.  Sure sounds to me like it might be the Allegra.  The swollen throat you describe definitely sounds like some type of allergic reaction.  The other drugs you've added are possibly just counteracting the reaction to the Allegra.   I'd try skipping the Allegra tomorrow, and see what happens.  You should also check the possible side effects for that drug.

BTW, I think a GP would be able to help you with this, you may not need to see an ENT for it.  I certainly hope you get better before 11/18.  Sometimes we have to be our own detectives.

I sounds to me like you are overmedicating for what is a minor issue. You need to back off on some of that allergy med and keep your appt with the ENT doc.

Re: Ears/Nose/Throat Problems

Guess my post wasn't that clear....I have been taking allegra for yrs for allergies...last Thursday when this throat thing first happened to me I was having lunch with my friend...I thought it was from talking for awhile.  Later that same day my throat just got more painful....so I didn't talk and used salt water rinse/chicken soup.

3 days later it was all gone....I continued to taking as I always do my armour and 1 allegra....no throat issues.

Monday....ear left one plugged up....dizzy....no throat issues at all....this ear thing going on Tues...Wednesday.  I finally go to store and pick up flonaze to try (never used before) and 30mg sudafed took 1.  Trying to dry up fluid in ear.  Relieve prressure.  This seemed to help...slept better Wednesday night.  Got up this morning 1st time since Monday my ear wasn't to bad...wasn't dizzy.  By noonish today my throat out of nowhere starts swelling up and hurting like it did last week Thursday with my friend at lunch.

It seems to be moving around LOL....I know it is confusing I am trying to explain it as it happened and it does sound kinda weird.  My internist doesn't have anything sooner available either at this point....I am thinking of seeing if I can find a family practice type place that could fit me in.  I know this time of yr probably gets more busy with people having flu/colds....funny thing I have none of that!

[ Edited ]

@tsavorite - I would still back off the allegra.  Allergies can occur even after years of no issues.

I'm plaqued with allergies year round and regularly have to change what I'm taking because either I develop a sudden allergy or my body builds up an immunity to it and it no longer works.

Perhaps you could go to a local Urgent Care.

Re: Ears/Nose/Throat Problems

Have you ever tried Mucinex?

It works well for me short term for the kind of symptoms you mention

Don't they have any urgent care facilities around where you live?

Re: Ears/Nose/Throat Problems

My teacher daughter has bad allergies; been on meds for years, and takes shots.   Per the doctor and allergy specialist, she rotates her allergy meds for better control, as they stop working for her after awhile.   She just recently stopped talking Allegra and went back to Zyrtec for awhile.
