What Are Breadcrumbs

Hi Everyone,

 

There have been several questions regarding the term breadcrumbs. Here is the technical definition of a breadcrumb when used with a website:

 

Breadcrumbs typically appear horizontally across the top of a Web page, often below title bars or headers. They provide links back to each previous page the user navigated through to get to the current page or—in hierarchical site structures—the parent pages of the current one. Breadcrumbs provide a trail for the user to follow back to the starting or entry point.

 

Translated in less technical terms, breadcrumbs are placed on websites to help you navigate back to a page you were previously on without using the back button in your browser.

 

Below  are examples of how breadcrumbs are used on QVC.com and within the Community forums. 

 

This is an example of breadcrumbs in the forums which is located just below SHOP BY CATEGORY. Each word in the breadcrumb can be clicked on.

These are examples of the use of Breadcrumbs on QVC.com. From the main page, anything you click on will appear next to the QVC logo. In this example the first click was New Arrivals.

This next breadcrumb is from a Peter Thomas Roth product page  on qvc.com that was selected from the New Arrivals page (item# A272316).
