That horrifying death of King Aelle is the Viking way of execution termed "blood eagle". Not only is the rib cage split and filleted off to each side of the chest, they also pull out the lungs to create the rest of the "wings" and put salt on the open wound and inside the  body cavity. Grotesque in every way.

 

For those who watched the now-cancelled series "Hannibal" on NBC, there was an epi that featured this method of killing.
