@libbyannE wrote:I stopped watching awards shows. The Oscars are the worst. Entertainment is fine, but the participants often seem to have overblown feelings of self-importance. They're just movies, folks.
@libbyannE, I disagree. During the Great Depression attendance at the movies skyrocketed. People want to be entertained or challenged, to laugh or cry, to be moved with emotion or thrilled and amazed by special effects and science fiction.
Arts in all their forms are good for the soul. People choose which movies, books, paintings, etc. make them happy but there's no other place where a guy in Sweden can write a book, have it catch on, published in English, move to the top of the bestseller list, made into a movie, nominated for an Oscar -- how this one guy in Sweden who wrote this book can ultimately make the world laugh and cry and love his work.
We create their celebrity through consuming their work and then a big part of the culture for some reason I can never figure out turns on them.
One thing every single actor and actress in Hollywood and all over the world have in common: They grew up watching. They were a fan first. They know how the movies moved and excited them.
And the grounded ones (including the one in my family) never lose that sense of excitement that they're now part of what they loved so much growing up.

Just saw a story on Inside Edition. Gary from Chicago, half of the African American couple-he is a convicted sex offender who recently got out of prison after 20 years served. Attempted rape, and under the CA three strikes law he was sent to prison after stealing a bottle of perfume.
He did a phone interview in which he said that he felt the Oscar thing was the start of turning his life around. Hopefully it is.
