Abandoned for years, The old Olympic village has been left largely untouched....

[ Edited ]

and not even known by many citizens of Germany as its Nazi history is a source of shame but recent athletic tournaments have been held there and efforts are underway to restore the complex into a living museum as well as into townhouses as of 2015.

Daily tours including Jesse Owens reconstructed dormitory, a shining superstar in an otherwise dark history of the 1936 olympics.

See pics....very haunting.

They should plow it under, and make a memorial to all who suffered injustice

Re: Abandoned for years, The old Olympic village has been left largely untouched....

There's some talk now of establishing a permanent Olympic site where all Olympic games will be held. It makes a certain amount of sense. The cost to host the Olympics is enormous and rather than have to build all new facilities every four years, just build them once in one spot and reuse them. Greece has been mentioned a lot as the ideal spot for the summer games and one of the Scandanavian countries as the site for the Winter games.

Finding suitable uses for the facilities after the games is a big challenge for the current host nations. Also, security is more and more of an issue. Building one secure facility that's reused every four years makes the most sense financially.

Economists have looked at this issue many, many times and have found that in most cases the costs of hosting the Olympics exceed the financial benefits. Los Angeles in 1984 was one of the rare exceptions, but the LA area already had the facilities it needed built so there was minimal cost needed for facility construction. The big advantage for the host city seems to be in making the residents happy to have been the host. There's a boost in civic pride and the residents are generally happier afterwards. How much is that happiness worth in terms of dollars and cents?
