Payless Shoes in financial trouble

I've read a couple of articles about Payless Shoes and it looks like they are in financial trouble. They are likely to close 1000 stores as they look to restructure their debt. Bankruptcy is also a possibility.

From Bloomberg News:

I haven't shopped much at Payless Shoes lately but at least they have 8W shoes in many of their comfort and athletic brands.

Very much like stores all over the US who are feeling the results of increase in on-line shopping.  I belived even more stores who sell on-line will find a way to free-ship.  This may result in an upgrade of the cost of items to hide the savings.

Well, I hope they don't all close!  Payless is where I get 99.5% of my shoes.

My area is innundated with Payless stores- I can see a few closing without it impacting my shopping there! I buy most of my athletic shoes from them- other shoes, not  nearly as much.

@Peaches McPhee

From a Footwear News article about Payless Shoes, they have 4400 stores. I guess if they close nearly 25% of them, that will still leave a lot of stores but it sounds like Payless wants to close small stores in malls and keep bigger stand alone stores. But suppliers say that Payless is not paying their bills on time. So who knows whether Payless can recover or not.

I like their Champion athletic slip on shoes. I suspect that if Payless is going to close stores that a nearby one in the mall will close since they are competing with shoe stores that sell name brand shoes at a discount.

Here is the Footwear News article:

And from the Racked website:

I'm surprised they've managed to stay in business this long.

A few years ago I could always find something I liked at Payless.  The last few years...in and out with nothing.
