Airplane regulations and lg duffel and weekender questions

I know some of this has been discussed before but I still have questions! I have not flown on a plane since 1986 so am not familiar with all the regulations. Is it possible to use the large duffel as a "carry-on" and the weekender as my handheld "purse"? I am flying United airlines and not sure if the weekender would be too big to consider a tote or purse. I guess I should just try to put everything in the duffel but would love the extra space if I could use the weekender too. Thanks for any help.
