Thank you for your update, Karnerblue, I am glad Buddy is feeling better!  I am sorry that I must have missed the post that you told us what medicine he is taking, would you mind very much enlightening me with that information?  I continue to keep you and Buddy in my prayers every day for lots of good, happy time together.

He's on Diazepam 1/4 tablet but I can increase if needed but I have not done that at this point - that's to relax him.  The other one for pain which he was originally prescribed with the wrong dosage is Gabapentin.  It's a capsule.

Karnerblue,

I’m so glad to hear that Buddy is resting more comfortably now, as I’m sure you are too. Thank you for updating us; I know I’ve been thinking of you, as have others.

Don’t worry about what tomorrow may bring—just enjoy this time with your little Buddy.   You both have my best wishes.

Thank you Dawn and Sammycat.  You guys are so sweet.  Last night was not so good.  He was up a lot and so of course I was too.  He still has that hacking problem.  It's not a cough.  It happens mostly when he's lying down.  He will be sound asleep and all of a sudden he will get up as quick as he can and start hacking .. like something is caught in his throat.  He will do that several times and when it ends, the last one sounds like he's going to spit up something.  He developed that a while back in April.  I had my husband take him to the vet but Buddy didn't do it while he was there, of course, so it was hard for the vet to say.  They seemed to think it was not a big concern.  It's getting worse now.  He sounds like he's going to choke.

He's sleeping soundly now next to my leg, as close as he can get. I sleep on the couch with him every night.  It's starting to take a toll on me.  I'm not getting much sleep sitting up all night.  I almost fell asleep at work today Smiley Happy

Well I need to call it a day.  Thanks again for thinking of us.  It helps more than you know.Heart

Re: Update on Buddy

[ Edited ]

@Karnerblue

First, I hope both you and Buddy have a good night's sleep tonight.

My small dog hacks like that at times when she pulls on her harness.  I don't have her wear just a collar on walks because she often reacts to other dogs and begins to pull and the collar puts more pressure on the trachea.  The harness doesn't even come up to her throat, but apparently when she begins to pull, it presses enough on her trachea that she coughs and at the end seems to want to spit up.  (We're working on training all the time.)

One other reason a dog can make a strange hacking sound is because of what is called a fistula.  That happens when a tooth has been pulled and there is an opening left behind (or sometimes a tooth has decayed and caused the opening).  This happened to one of my other dogs (now long deceased) and she went back for repair.  Some vets refer this type of issue to canine dental specialists.

Neither of these reasons might be Buddy's issue, but I thought I'm mention them just in case.

The other thing that I'm aware of that can cause a cough is a heart condition.  I hope that's not the case especially since your vet already checked him.

Hope by the time you read this you've slept well and that you have a peaceful week together.

Karnerblue,

Reading all your other posts, I never picked up on the fact that you work outside the home.  God bless you for handling all this.  I have a precious vision of your little Buddy pressed against your leg.  Sorry to hear that this is disrupting your sleep.  Thoughts and prayers are with you for continued strength.

Thank you tends2dogs for your thoughts and prayers.  It gives me the strength I need.  Yes, I do work.  I never take time off.  I've actually accrued about 8 weeks vacation right now.  I did take three days off the first week he took ill.  I could not leave him alone in his condition.  Now I still worry that he's home alone all day but at least he is sleeping most of that time (I think).  I usually find him sound asleep on the couch all nestled in my blanket, or should I say his blanket because he seems to have taken ownership of it.  It's the really fuzzy one from Malden Mills, white with angels on it.  I bought it last year for myself.

He had a good night last night, so I was able to get some rest.  I'm checking in from work on my break!

You guys are ALL great. Heart
