Can an eternity ring be sized?

Has anyone ever tried to size an eternity band ring? I have my eye on one on sale but it is 5.5 and I would need it taken down to at least a 5 and preferably a 4.5, but don't know if it's just not worth it because the jeweler would charge too much for work like this. It has small sapphires going all the way around. TIA for any advice you have~
