Question about solar lantern

I just received two of these lanterns, they didnt come with rechargeable batteries as described. I decided to put them out because I really like the design. They are lighting up!! The sun must have charged them. What is the battery compartment for, if they work with out batteries.(for a cloudy night?) I was going to return them. They actually shine brighter than in the pic.
