Re: Has anyone installed insulation in their attic lately?

The blown in insulation is jsut that- blown in material.  I was told is less costly because of the labor involved- faster to 'install' and less manpower also. But it's jsut loose between the joists, imagine an attic full of styrofoam packing peanuts!!

Blown insulation is best applied to areas of the house where it is enclosed like the spaces between floors or inside walls. It is okay for attics if you plan on never going up there to do anything like replace or install electrical boxes or wiring for lights or other appliances...fans and such. Dealing with the loose stuff is real problem when repairs have to be done in those areas.

Very important to research the correct type to use for the area, there are many different kinds.  (Mosture barriers and how to avoid too much moisture.)

We've always used the sheets.  Have shoveled out tons of the blown kind in old houses after tearing down walls.  It all seems to settle towards the bottom/floor level.  And the rest of the way up the wall is bare and unprotected from the elements.

When our Pa home was built in 1983 the builder put in the blown in insulation in the attic. Around 10 years later we wanted to use the space for storage so my DH installed styrofoam about 1/2 " thick over that insulation and under the roof. He laid out a plywood floor then over the styrofoam, and installed an attic exhaust fan into one of the openings on the vent of the house. All in all - it cost about $500 with him doing all the labor, and made our home notibeably warmer in winter and much cooler in summer.

Re: Has anyone installed insulation in their attic lately?

We had our attic insulated last summer when we had central air cond. installed.

I was not aware until then that it is very difficult/impossible (?) to have CA installed AFTER blown in insulation.

We have a large attic and a lot of storage space, almost all floored, and this house is MUCH more comfortable in both hot and cold weather than our former, older ho,e.
