Re: Our yard is surrounded by really big evergreens

I have a very large Douglas fir very close to my house.  If it ever goes my whole house will be gone.  I don't want to take it down because I love the big trees around me.  I just hope for the best.

Depending on your insurance policy, you may be able to file a claim for the cost.

A tree near my house was hit by lightning, insurance paid to have it removed.

A neighbor's tree fell on my house, neighbor's insurance paid for a new roof.

I'm assuming that the wind must have been ferocious, but although it was right behind us, I didn't hear it fall.

Since we expect a Nor'Easter coming in, I will now worry until we can get a tree specialist in to attempt to assess the health of the other trees.

Just spreading the word- be aware if you have very tall trees near you. Although there's very little prevention available to anyone in this situation, everyone should keep an eye on what's falling out of the sky at you, especially in hard wind.

Evergreen trees in the Northeast are suffering from a devastating blight.  Late last summer we had a yard-work business cut down 25 spruce trees on our lot.  I wanted to cry.

Re: Our yard is surrounded by really big evergreens

At one point in my husband's career, he was a contractor and traveled a lot, so all was left to me at home.  We had a 4,000 sq. ft. home and a 35,000 gal pool with 22 trees on 1/2 acre.  One night we also had ferocious winds, as tornadoes were in the area.  When I surveyed both yards before heading out to work the next day, we had several branches down and a bunch of really small ones.  On my way home, I stopped at Lowe's and bought myself an electric chain saw.  Boy, I loved that chain saw!  Took care of those branches myself.  My neighbors could not believe I was doing that.  "Aren't you goingg to wait for your husband to get home?"  "Heck no," was my stock answer.  I did all of the gardening anyway on this behemouth piece of property.
