Caribbean Cruise ~ Are jeans appropriate

We are going in December. I have lots of denim. Would a pair of jeans be too hot, or too heavy, or just not good style? I am packing light and thought I could wear them on the plane from my cold location. But I don't want to get stuck with them. Where I live they are just fine for all seasons. Where I am going, I am not so sure. Any advice would be appreciated.

And I am a black clothing kind of gal. Is black too dark for the cruise as a basic color?
