Speeds and connections

I have a question that bothers me about speeds on laptops! I have an HP computer running Vista..have all the latest updates installed. I connect wirelessly just fine to my netgear and have fair speeds although I do get some droppage. My husband has an HP running Windows 7 as does my daughter when she comes to visit from out of town also running HP with Windows 7. They have bad connections and speeds most of the time....they also have the latest updates. Why would one laptop have no problems and the other two be so bad most of the time? The cable people had no answers and said the signal should be the same for them...........
