Ipod Disaster - HELP asap thanks

My hubby has had an ipod for many many years, building a library of over 20,000, we bought a new MacBook Pro this weekend and I gave him my old MacBook, all of his music was on a external hard drive attached to IMac I use for work.

I tried a few times to move the music unsuccessfully and under the instruction of a tech at Apple care, I accidental overwrote the files on the external drive.

Well needless to say we discoverd this at 9 30 PM last night.

I am waiting to call Apple.

I am furious and annoyed and oh so worried about this all.

Any brilliant ideas out there?
