Can you use an Amazon gift card to open an account so they can "buy" free apps?

I have read you have to have a credit card tied to the account to buy free apps and need an alternative.

I'd rather use the amazon gift card, but if that won't work I'm assuming a prepaid credit card would work?

Anyone know if the gift card would work?
