How to choose an ipad type device?

My laptop is dying and I think I want to go with something smaller. I am not sure whether I want a Kindle Fire, IPad, Samsung Notepad or something else. I know I want internet access on it to contact friends and will want a keypad of some type, even if I have to pay extra for that. I need 4G or some internet access as I have no wi-fi at home.

I would appreciate if some of you would list what you have, why you like it better than other brands you may have looked at.
