Computer virus protection

I have Norton 2010 on my hp laptop and it isn't suppose to expire till Aug. But I keep getting a message telling me I have 2 days left to be protected. Not sure if this is a scam or not. Don't want to be out there with out anything

Does anyone know and good free virus protection I can install. What is good,
