Why does it take so long to get Etsy shipments?

I've ordered a few things from Etsy sellers on December 25, and I have yet to receive anything. I've written both of them, and they both said they will arrive "soon." What does that mean, and why does it take so long to ship something? It's the last time I'm ordering anything from Etsy. Is this typical of Etsy?
