Might be moving to Las Vegas....thoughts?

Ladies - DH and I may have the opportunity to move to Las Vegas for myjob which would actually located in Primm. We are a little familiar with Vegas, but I'd really like to hear from people who live or lived there...what is Primm like? We would rent initially, so what areas should we consider? Pros and cons...I know it gets extremely hot, but other than that, I don't know...DH is retired so work for him is not a consideration. would love to hear thoughts! Thanks in Advance!!

Re: Might be moving to Las Vegas....thoughts?

Hi ckr, I've lived here in Las Vegas for over 22yrs now.. Depending on which side of the city you decide to live, Primm is about 30-40 minutes outside of Las Vegas. It's actually near the NV/Calif border. I'm not sure when you'd be moving here but it wouldn't hurt to take a trip out here prior to your move so you and hubby can drive around to decide where to live. It also wouldn't hurt to get in touch with a local realtor because they'll also help you out with whether you'd want to rent a home or rent an apartment, or condo. This will possibly save you time when you're about to move here. We live in Summerlin, a very nice large upscale community on the northwest part of town with about 180k people. There are many nice gated communities up here where you can rent a place but most places are single family homes, i.e. the "suburb". From here, you'd take the 215 Beltway & connect to the I-15 South. It's about a 40 minute drive to Primm with traffic. We're about 20-30 minutes away from the Strip. The Strip ( Las Vegas Blvd.) divides the east side of town from the westside. To get to Primm you'd simply take the I-15 South a pretty easy drive once you're out of the city limits. A lot depends on what you want to spend per month on rent and like anywhere else the location will determine what your monthly rent payment will be. There are many nice communities here including the east side of town, Green Valley in Henderson, Anthem, etc.. So many... but it would take me a long time time to write everything out, lol! As far as the weather goes, it's only hot in the summer months mainly starting in late May thru September with July & August being the hottest. The Fall is very nice & mild and the Winters can get very cold from daytime highs in the 45-50 range and night time down into the high 20's to mid 30's depending on where you live. The east side of town is always warmer in summer because it's located southeast, slightly lower desert. I'm on the opposite side, about 2200 ft. above the Strip and if it's 105 on the east side, it's about 95 on my side of town, lol.. But it is a dry heat! Contrary to what most people think, it's NOT hot here 365 days of the year! Now about Primm, it's primarily a place where many people stop before heading into So. Calif to get gas, stop at the Primm casinos to do some last minute gambling, and go the Premium Outlet Mall which has some great shopping btw! The majority of people who go to work in Primm live here in Vegas and work in Primm @ one of the hotels/casinos there. Primm is also an alternate location that many people will stay when Las Vegas is fully booked especially on a holiday weekend. I've got some friends who prefer to stay there and the hotel rates are much cheaper, lol. The rents here have gone up.. Las Vegas is not necessarily an inexpensive place to live but one of the pluses is that there are no state taxes but our sales tax is high @ 8.1%. Our gas tends to be higher than the national average too. I'm sure I haven't begun to cover everything but just ask away Smiley Happy)!

There isn't much in Primm but the casinos.........you're right at the California/Nevada border.........you could also look at Henderson, it's up in the mountains a bit, near the dam..........very hot there.........flash floods happen just about every time it rains.......and very very cold in winter.....BUT...........great places to eat and there is always Lake Mead for water spots although it's waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay down right now..............................raven

Re: Might be moving to Las Vegas....thoughts?

I have a former friend who bought a house in Summerlin in 2000. She and her husband are both retired. Many of the gated tracts within this community are for seniors -- with a clubhouse, pools, etc. It does get brutally HOT in the summer for several months - and the nights are also very warm so the air conditioning needs to run a lot. Most people enjoy the entertainment/hotels, many great restaurants, people-watching and lower cost-of-living. Best to visit and speak to people who actually live there and get their opinions. I could never live there - not my style of living and it's way too hot for me. It is the desert!!!!!! I suggest u take a trip there in the next few weeks to see if u could cope.

Hot, but, you mentioned that, LOL.

I've just never been especially fond of Vegas, even as a vacay destination, so, it wouldn't be a place I would choose to live.

In fairness, I've not spent enough time there to know the behind the scenes city.

I'll bet there are posters that can give you some good information.
