She did it beautifully,  much better than Whitney who tried to make it too rock 'n roll.   It is not a pop song; it's our National Anthem and should be sung as such.

I couldn't put my finger on it but you said everything I wanted to but couldn't. I love Gaga and think she has great talent and I especially like her when she is being more of a Tony Bennett kind of girl rather than a meat dress in an egg kind of girl. She over did it on this one IMO, just like you said. I don't have a problem with a blonde white girl being soulful but start and finish that way too. I agree that Whitneys version is considered iconic and I think that is in no danger of being toppled. If she wouldn't have added those riffs that seemed totally uncomfortable and awkward in there, it would have been much much better.
