Kindle Fire - Nook Tablet - and internet connections

OK, I know this should go in Electronics , but they don't know me over there.

How do tablets connect to the internet? Do they use wifi only or are they like smartphones?

I read on B&N website that email/ web browsing on the nook tablet was wifi.

Kindle Fire has some new browsing with an Amazon proprietary system. Is that also a wifi?

Basically, I would like to access the internet but I will not have wifi access where we are staying (gotta love those grandparents - they still have the rotary phone on the kitchen wall {#emotions_dlg.wub})
