First baby just turned 2 so couple are well stocked with baby stuff.

Now days, yes it's pretty common. It's not so much about stocking up but about celebrating the new baby.

I don't think it should be expected.  If I know someone well and they are having a child of a different gender than the first one, I might take over a cute outfit.

Yes, while you most likely will not see big items like crib, high chair or changing station the new baby will need new clothing, diapers, bibs...maybe a new stroller. Second child second shower does not bother me a bit.

An acquaintance of mine had 4 babies (boys & girls) .... and 4 showers she basically gave herself .... with a registry for ea. to boot~!  

I only attended the first shower.

At work, we have a "sprinkle" when someone has a second baby,  usually when they are a few years a part.  It's more about acknowledging the second baby than stocking a nursery.

I think the gift-grab theoretically continues no matter how many are popped out...

I have heard of a " sprinkle " shower when the 2nd baby is a different sex from the 1st baby.
