Re: I found my perfect apple!

I LOVE Pink Ladies, but...man oh man they are expensive!

Last couple years the apples have been hit/miss.

I'll get a bag of shiny, firm, heavy apples only to be mealy when I eat.

Oooof....nothing like a bad apple (ha!).

@rustee I've never seen a Macoun that I am aware of, but if I ever run across them I will give them a try!

I used to love Macouns when I lived on the East coast, but I don't think you get them here (if so, they are hard to find).  I like most crisp apples.  I used to like Black Arkansas but I hardly ever see those anymore.

Macouns are the parents of the Honeycrisps.

@SilleeMee

When I was working, I used to bring a raw cut-up apple w/ cinnamon to microwave after lunch.  It would smell so good!  It's been 5 years, but I know I could stick my nose in that microwave...and scents of cinnamon/apple would still be there! Ha.

Re: I found my perfect apple!

They don't keep well, so I only get them if I am in New England in the brief fall season:  MacIntosh. The uber-apple to me.  Fragrant, juicy, but a good bite in season.  Gets mushy really soon after its peak though.

I like Granny Smiths too, but they are a bit hard to bite into.

Good for you, @SilleeMee.

Haven't tried that many yet, but so far I'm a Gala gal.  Another native fruit from New Zealand.

Re: I found my perfect apple!

The Empire. It came out of the Cornell University labs in the 1940s, which sort of takes all the romance out of it, but it's still wonderful and my all-time favorite apple. It's a cross between Red Delicious, which I don't like, and Macs, which I do.

Some info on apples of NYS, a great apple-growing region.

RED DELICIOUS APPLES

And, the darker the outside, the better.  Cold from the refrigerator, with a little sea salt on the slices. YUM!
