My kids don't collect anything. They would rather spend their money on good wine, dining out, cooking for friends, or travel/entertainment. I just don't want to dust them or take up my limited shelf space with collectables that aren't functional. I have and regularly use my Polish pottery pieces. One exception is that I collect souvenir pens from places I have visited as they take up almost no space in luggage. I started this on a trip to Ireland as every stop we made had the most beautiful or funky pens with great graphics. My lol moment though was the pen I got in Washington D.C. with gold trim and the city name embossed around the middle of the pen....or so I thought until I looked at it properly at home with my reading glasses and it actually said Made in China.
