"Billy Joe Royal: Country Singer Dies at 73 in North Carolina, Publicist Confirms

Royal released his breakout single, “Down in the Boondocks,” in 1965, before he began recording country music with Atlantic Records. He gave his final concert in Georgia on Sept. 24."

I loved that song and played it all the time when I was in high school.

Oh man, that sux... I love that song!

Every night I watch the light

from the house up on the hill.

I love a little girl that lives up there

and I guess I always will...

I thought their forbidden romance sounded so "grown up" and tragically beautiful when I was little.  I think he also made Cherry Hill Park?  Another great one.  RIP!

He will be missed. So many singers I've enjoyed have passed this year.

Oh my goodness I had forgotten about Cherry Hill Park until I just played a clip . . . very scandalous back in the day!

I saw him perform live "back in the day".  He was very good.  At least he continued doing what he loved right up to the end and that's all most of us can hope for.

Yes!  Even as a kid I knew something very saucy was going on there.  Mary Hill was quite liberated indeed.  lol  Hey it was 1969!  Now I know why my brother loved it so much.  Talk about 2 songs at opposite ends of the spectrum though.

I'm glad I took a second look at the thread title.  I thought it said, "Billy Joel...".  May Billy Joe Royal rest in peace.
