DORCHESTER CO. S.C. (WSAV) — Not even record flooding can stop the fire ants in South Carolina.
Video recorded by WSAV photojournalist Chris Murray shows what appears to be a floating island of fire ants floating down the water in Dorchester County South Carolina.
The video is fast on its way to becoming viral.

Oh Marp, it's awful isn't it? Not even this small silver lining!

Yuck. I'd be taking a torch to those suckers - with all that water around it's not like you'd set anything else on fire!!!

Eeeek! Now I'm itching all over!
They looked like they were enjoying themselves...lol

Not familiar with fire ants-- are they the brown things or the whitish things in that video?

We in the southern states are VERY familiar with these fire-from-hell ants! They. Do. Not. Die. They are very aggressive...if you step on a mound, count on many ant bites...which blister & hurt like crazy for several days after.
They are the brown portion....probably several thousand ants in that video. In May, when DFW had flooding, people where posting these same pics/videos. Wise to stay clear of them....very clear!

Wow, hardy little buggers!
Perhaps a superhero species of the insect world, LOL.
Wonder if the ones on the bottom layer are alive.

I think the white things are their larvae. Blech.

@JustJazzmom, I'm not sure what the white things are but the brown mass are the ants. Consider yourself lucky that you are not familiar with them. They are aggressive and their bites burn and sting like crazy. They attack enmasse and cumulatively their bites are dangerous.
This link explains more about how they stick together to float like that: http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation-now/2015/10/06/floating-fire-ant-islands-south-carolina-fl...
