I think because of the era of it's release/popularity, some want to think it is anti-Vietnam, but it simply isn't. It isn't really anti war, it is the expression of the feelings someone in battles goes through, and they very well could be totally supportive of the event, just sad, scared and lonely. Those things happen to people who believe in the cause they are fighting for as well.
And I read that Webb did write it as an anti-war song. Maybe we are both incorrect.

If you liked Macarthur Park, you should google Glen Campbell performing it in concert, back in the 80's I believe.

The song I remember of that time though, was "The green green grass of home" in the lyrics.
