All the books by Morgan Llwelyn - she writes about Irish history. Love her characters and the history comes alive.

I don't know how available her books are nowadays, but I have a whole slew of British historical fiction books written by Jean Plaidy in the 70's and 80's, who also wrote mystery/romance novels under the name Victoria Holt. The Jean Plaidy books are well-researched and well-written; very accurate and easy to read. She covers all the kings and queens from William the Conqueror to Victoria.

Historical fiction is my favorite genre. Love all the Phillippa Gregory books about the Tudor era. I find books about Anne Boleyn and the rest of Henry VIII ' s wives fascinating. Margaret George does a great job of bringing the past to life also. I much prefer novels about actual historical figures rather than the "steamy romance" type of historical fiction. Hilary Mantel is also great.

Some favorites, which I reread now and then:
Desiree
Dr. Zhivago
A Tale of Two Cities (this book about the French Revolution by Dickens is a perfect novel IMO. "it was the best of times; it was the worst of times" - and who can forget Madame Defarge?).
