The Royal Touch

I’ve been cutting and styling hair since I was 10, but of course they were my dolls. I did take the leap when I was 12 to cut and perm my best friend’s hair before going to our first boy/girl party. I remember it like it was yesterday. We walked to the corner drug store, bought a “Toni” perm kit and hid in her bathroom for 3 hours. I turned her into the belle of the ball! She walked around all night as if she was royalty. That special confidence I gifted her that day was a feeling I wanted to have forever.

Fast forward to 2014, one of the high points of my career: I was able to work with Royalty, the Duchess of York! The Duchess is one of the most genuine, authentic, sincere women I’ve ever met; stunningly beautiful inside and out. Her philanthropic nature takes her all over the globe to help others. As a Royal, she is expected to look the part at all times. When I met her she confided in me, telling me her hair was one of her biggest challenges. When she travelled to some of these obscure places, photographers were always taking pictures and she usually wanted to hide. She has suffered from much public scrutiny with many things, including her outward appearance. It was important for her to look her best at all times, even when there wasn’t a stylist following her around.

Collaborating with the Duchess to make it possible to style her hair on her own was exhilarating. She loved the idea of my Perfecter, but told me her hair was more unruly then others and had a mind of its own. We decided to amp up the technology so there would be no damage to her sensitive red hair, so we added smoothing plates to the middle of the Perfecter to help control what she described as unruly hair.

Months later, The Duchess told me that she finally could do her hair herself, and she took the tool everywhere with her. Her and I named it the Perfecter Ultra and worked together on an infomercial. She was a delight to work with! She learned the name of everyone on the team, on the set, and behind the scenes. It just amazed me how she remembered each and every one and call them by their first names all week.  We all had an amazing experience working with the Duchess!

Styling is not only a talent that came naturally to me, but also a talent that I always knew I should share with others. Whenever I am styling, whether it’s hair, someone’s wardrobe, the décor in my home, or a dinner for family and friends, I’m in heaven. It’s when I lose track of all time and could do it forever. Having the Duchess sincerely thank me for helping boost her confidence took me back to my roots of why I got into this business, to help everyone look and feel like royalty.
