The Isaac Mizrahi Exhibit

by on ‎07-29-2016 01:23 PM

Ever since I learned that the Jewish Museum in New York was featuring an exhibit of Isaac Mizrahi, I couldn't wait to go!  Well, I finally had a chance to visit and I wanted to share my experience with you.  I planned a girl's trip with my mom and sister and our itinerary included a Broadway show, a walking cupcake tour, afternoon tea, a comedy show and the exhibit.

The exhibit was a smartly curated mix of fashion, photos and even film.  I felt like I learned about a whole other side of Isaac we don't often get to explore on air.  The exhibit opens with a large rainbow wall of fabric boards.  Isaac fun fact #1:  He's a saver.  All of the mood boards on display Isaac had saved over the years.  These boards served as an inspiration for the fabrics and colors he would use in his collections.  The way the boards were displayed as you first walked in was so striking and a nice tease of what was to come.

The exhibit wasted no time getting right to the fashion.  On display were dozens of vintage looks straight from the runway.  Many of these looks were from Isaac's private collection (remember he's a saver!)  But some pieces were on loan from private collectors.  The exhibit was bright, colorful, whimsical and feminine; exactly what he does with his collection for QVC.  It was neat to see how his love for florals and brights hasn't died over the years.

The exhibit then lead to a room featuring Isaac’s entire original runway sketches. Isaac's runway shows featured some of the biggest supermodels of the time.  I'm talking about Christy Turlington, Linda Evangelista, Veronica Webb and Naomi Campbell to name a few.  It was so cool to see their names written in the top corner of his sketches since I was such a big fan of these women.

The exhibit then explored Isaac's love of theater.  Isaac has designed costumes for ballet companies, the Royal Opera and more.  Not only were the costumes on display but a monitor was set-up showing video of some of these productions so you could see the costumes in action.  One of my favorites was the two frog attendants from the opera Platee.

The next hall featured more iconic runway looks that had more of a sense of humor to them.  I got a chuckle out of the ball gown with baby bjorn sling and the dress made of Coca-cola can paillettes was also a favorite.

The exhibit finished with a mini-documentary that was a brief overview of Isaac's career. Isaac fun facts #2 and #3: Isaac had a part in one of my all-time favorite movies Fame and he is super smart as I learned from his many appearances on Jeopardy.  And of course Isaac's time on QVC was highlighted which was great to see.

If you have an opportunity to visit the exhibit I highly recommend it.  My mom and sister both enjoyed it and my sister doesn't even follow fashion.  The exhibit runs through August 7, 2016 at the Jewish Museum in New York City.
